These Buoys Cost $1320.12 Apiece
We carried 84 normally. 48 outside, 36 inside. Sometimes, missions would require more. 3 or 4 would be bathythermographs or BT's to check where (depth) the temperature inversion layer was.
A few actives (pingers), command activated sonar buoys. We don't use those except for real or simulated attack as they can be heard a long way off and unless you're on top of a sub, he'll hear it and quietly slip away. If you have located a sub to kill with the passives, you put a pinger on top, do a 90/270 while it's deploying and if it has close aboard contact, put out a torp on the buoy mark on top (fly over the buoy).
The rest were DIFAR (Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording) which is a passive buoy that gives a bearing to a sound emitting contact.
I don't know what kind of buoys these are, but I bet they're good ones. The failure rate when I flew was only 1/100.
If this ASW stuff lights your fire, do a web search for the Mk-60 CAPTOR Mine. I loved those thing. Find a choke point like Gibraltar or the Straits of Messina and you can shut down sub traffic PDQ. [:p]

We carried B-57 depth bombs until a no nukes at sea treaty was signed. All the AMAC gear was ripped out of the plane. I know a lot of helo boys were happy. We could get away from the blast, they couldn't. [:0]0
