do people use road flares anymore?

bobski
was a time it was considered basic stuff for a trunk kit.
do you do it anymore or has smart phones cut responses so short they aren't needed anymore?

    Now they come with a bent wire stand --- that falls off when you try to bend it to stand it up. 84 has a good idea, but it shouldn't be necessary to carry a plastic jug.

    I bought a set of 3 flashing red LED lights with magnetic bases; they work well, mainly because folks are conditioned to slow down when they see flashing red lights.

    They're a thing of the past that went on the Wayside when they came out with the reflective triangles. Less chance of getting burnt, doesn't burn the asphalt, works even if they get wet and does the same job

    I carry one when I'm out in the boondocks. It's a good fire starter even in the wettest conditions.

    Apparently WSP still does. You can spot prior accident scenes around here by the grey residue of burned fusees on the shoulder.

    When I lived in Hawaii they would use them to mark the road when they burned the sugar cane fields. It was eerie to be driving through nothing but smoke and all you could see were the red flares burning on the road. This was back in the mid 80's so that might not be what they do now.

    That's what I was thinking. I haven't seen them at auto parts stores. Then again I'm in California. I did remember seeing CHP using them couple years back. Truck stops? Next time I'm at Pilot I'll have to see.

    Haven't you seen that Liberty mutual insurance commercial where the kid is holding the jack handle asking his buddy if that's the lug wrench, while the buddy is holding the lug wrench? He's on the phone with his daddy saying "of course I know what a lug wrench is Dad". So typical. A responsible parent wouldn't allow their kid anywhere near to driving a car unit they could demonstrate they know how to do the basics. They probably don't teach kids these skills in Driver's Ed due to liability.

    Yes, I have always carried them in vehicles and on snowmobiles. On the snow mobile if you were stranded, out of gas or broke down in the arctic the black smoke from a burning track can be seen for miles it will also get wet wood burning so you can survive.

    they are still used in our area. I have a case of the 30 minute, half case of the 15 minute and a hand full of the 5 minute flares
    I had friends that worked on the RR

    I have been driving a long time but I have never seen them in use. Our school buses carried them in the '50s and '60s; that's the only time I have even seen them.

    We still use that at the PD where I work. We tried LED flares but chit heads drive over them on purpose.

    Plus no fake sticks of dynamite either. I use to play with flares when I was a kid and they burn hot as hell!

    In the semi, it's reflective triangles. But in my pickups, one had reflective triangles(03 F350), LED triangles in the 06 F150 and flashing beacons in the 97 F150.
