I Wonder Why Not Arlington?
I just read McCain is going to be buried at Annapolis where he can inspire the middies.
Having a father and grandfather who were four star admirals will be difficult to explain that this guy only made it to captain.
Usually guys with combat experience are fast tracked up the ladder double especially with an admiral bloodline.
I really hope someone is brave enough to write an accurate bio of him in the spirit of William Manchester.

Too much of a rain onup to be buried in Arlington?
His jets were cooling in Hanoi Hilton so maybe that's why he didn't make admiral? Pops and grand pops couldn't tow that tug any further. Maybe they knew dude was broken way back when? Can you imagine him like Kurtz when he came home? If he was I might be able to respect him.
Accurate bio? In this day and age? Might as well be on Wikipedia with etch-a-sketch as the template.0 -
Read that, too. As I recall his father and grandfather were also naval academy graduates. One of his uncles was a West Point graduate and general. His great grandfather William was a Confederate soldier who died in the war. I'll guarantee you that this was hushed up as much as possible.
One day back in early 2005, I was staying in Carrolton, Carroll County, Mississippi, doing my family geenalogy research. On this particular day I was travelling back from copying records in in some counties to the west of Carroll, when I left Greenwood, MS, named after the Choctaw Chieftan and slave owner Greenwood Leflore/LeFluer circa 1830 after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, and headed NE on Highway 7 to very near the Teoc River. This was a big day for me, a very big day.
I had done all of my homework, and knew where my people had lived since 1833. When I arrived at the Teoc River...Choctaw for River or Creek of the Tall Pines. I stopped just short of the bridge. Little did I know then that this was the spot of Waverly, William McCain's plantation. To the right was the ridge that I refer to as Choctaw Ridge, that runs from south of Memphis in a bow down to Vicksburg area, and to the left was the flatland, known as the Mississippi Delta all the way to the river bearing its name. I was looking for a dirt county road just before getting to the bridge, that ran up to the top of the ridge. I found the road nearest the river and crossed a creek that had to be known as Dog Branch...but that's another, very exciting story.0 -
The simplest answer is just because you are eligible to be buried at Arlington doesn't mean you have to be. If it was his wish to feed crabs instead of worms, that's his choice.
The snarky, snide side of me would be tempted to say that only genuine heroes are eligible. But I won't.0 -
He didn?t make Admiral simply because he retired before he could be selected. I don?t know any more than anybody else about Captain McCain, but I expect if he wanted to be buried at Arlington he would have been given head of the line privileges, true history, rumors and cow cookies notwithstanding. 0 -
McCain underwent years of physical therapy for injuries sustained when he was shot down. Although he was returned to flight status, he continued to have poor results on his physical exams. His affair and divorce did not help his journey to flag rank.
A far as where he/ his family wanted him to be buried- their call. Naval officer/ naval family, I can understand wanting to be buried at Canoe U. Hell, I have visited Chesty Puller's grave- it is at a small church in rural Virginia- where he and his family wanted him to be buried.

My understanding is he wanted to be buried next to his class mate and life long friend, Admiral Chuck Larson. My guess is that once again, loving the lime light McCain would rather be a big fish buried in a little pond, then getting lost among the giants buried at Arlington.

Consider this. Senator McCain's father and grandfather each spent over 40 years in the navy. During that time they both served in a little career builder called World War Two. Not surprisingly the need for admirals multiplied tenfold and so did the vacancies to fill them. The senior Admiral McCain was promoted to 4 stars posthumously. Senator McCain served in the navy for about 23 years and attained the rank of Captain. You do know that "only a Captain" in the Navy is equivilent to a full Colonel in the Army or Marine Corps. It is not to shabby to achieve in 23 years. He never aspired to equal his father's military career. Some may be embellishing his shortfalls because of his falling out with the Commander in Chief, whose military career doesn't exist.0 -

Consider the praise heaped on to McCain by the left wing media.
If he was actually a republican, a conservative they would have mentioned his passing and move on.
He is a liberal hero because he championed the causes of the left.
As to what kind of naval officer he was, what kind of senator he was, what kind of man he was, well, if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all.
