Radar Guns Question.
Looking at buying a used radar unit. Most likely the hand held gun style unit. Any brands/styles/kinds better than others? Any to stay away from? TIA for any input.

I was looking at them a few weeks ago. I was thinking I could use it on arrows instead of my Chronograph. The are expensive, at least more so than I thought. It also looks like Kustom Signal is one of the main builders/supplies to the Police.0 -

I'm going to use it to clock cars/trucks going past our house. We live 12 miles from town on a 2 lane county road. The speed limit on the road is 40 MPH to mile 11.5. Then the speed limit drops to 25 MPH due to there being a country school. The 25 MPH(20 on school days)zone is 1/2 mile long. Then the speed limit is 35 MPH above that.
We live in the 25 MPH zone, and cars/pickups/log trucks/dump trucks fly by here ALL DAY LONG. Some of these trucks whistle by here at 50+ loaded.
I want to see if they are really going as fast as I think they are.0 -

You should ask the Sheriff to post a speed trap there for a few weeks.
I think once you see how fast people are going its going to PO you even more.0 -
Honestly, check out flea bay, they always have outdated ex-police radar units listed and many of them are under $100. Get one with the tuning fork included so that you can calibrate it, but since you can't use it for speed enforcement, spot-on accuracy is not a factor. 0 -
Much cheaper to buy a Radar spectrum chirper. Available in a kit. Set it to randomly chirp, and you will see brakelights.
Along with a fake patrol car, billboard or chloroplast fullsize model, only the most brazen regulars will trust it to always be a fakeout.
Then, a call to the local constabulary, and they just might garner some heavy donations for the Christmas Party.0 -

I had one made my Bushnell. Made for baseballs and stuff, but worked pretty well on cars as well. Took 3 C size batteries I think. 0 -

The Bushnell will nail them....owned one when I coached baseball and it's very accurate...even on vehicles. If memory is correct it was a tad under $100 [;)]0 -
If the county is going to ignore it, put your own speed bump in at the 25mph sign. Lived in a county island where we had the same problem. Neighbors got together one evening with bags of asphalt and two cans of yellow paint to stripe it. 3 months later the county came out and installed one on the other end of the road.

What we found years ago was we ended up arresting the local people who were speeding, then they got upset because we weren't arresting the "right people".0 -

When I first got into LE, I used a Kustom Signals hand-held radar. It was huge compared to the ones today, but worked just fine. Now, we just use forward and rear-mounted radars. Golden Eagle and Stalker radars. All good. 0 -

You can buy a Kustom HR-12 on fleabay for under $100. We have a couple that are well over 30 years old that we still use. They work fine. They are fairly durable, most of the Golden Eagles we are using in our patrol vehicles are close to 20 years old. 0 -

What we found years ago was we ended up arresting the local people who were speeding, then they got upset because we weren't arresting the "right people".
Happens frequently here, someone will come in complaining about speeding in their neighborhood. We'll hammer it with attention and invariably get them or their spouse for speeding. [:D]0 -
I had this problem a few years ago and the county would not send a deputy out or take any action.
What I ended up doing was marking the road at a known distance and timed the vehicles with a stop watch. I had a spreadsheet I made with a formula that told me the speed they were going when I typed in the seconds it took them to travel the distance.
I took that to the sheriff showing people were doing up to 60 mph in a 25 zone and they did start coming out.0 -
It's been a while since I looked into or priced hand-held RADAR units. Main manufacturers were Kustom Signals and MPH.
What I found was they would sell a "certified" unit for law enforcement use for around $1,000.
And, they would sell a "sports" unit for measuring baseball and softball speed for around $150.
THEY WERE THE SAME UNIT! Same case, same innards, same everything, except:
The law enforcement unit was painted black, and the sports unit was painted blue.
So, look for a sports unit, and if you want it to look like a law enforcement unit, paint it.0
