Hiroshima saved American lives.
Dresden may have saved Soviet lives, but not so much American lives. Well inside the Soviet sphere, the firebombing of Dresden was done after the Battle of the Bulge had been resolved, and it was obvious to all that the Wehrmacht was not longer able to resist the advances from the either the east or the west.
Some have postulated that the Dresden raids had as much to do with showing the Soviets the power of the US and British bomber fleets as it did with materially affecting the war effort.
It did not, IMO, raise to the level of a war crime as some say because it was a communication hub and an industrial center that strategic value. Firebombing it, however, probably had minimal affect on winning the war, and with the diversion of resources from more time sensitive strategic targets may have been counter-productive.0 -
