Minimum standards for firearms packaging

What are the minimum standards for firearms packaging when shipping?

I have a Rossi Circuit Judge I want to sell and the original box it came in. However, when I place the judge inside the box the top rest right against the top side of the box with no padding or space at all. I feel uncomfortable shipping the gun like this. Is this standard, to ship a gun in this tight of a box or do new firearms come to a gun store(where I purchased it) in a box inside in extra packaging? How can I cure this? What kind of packaging do most people ship their firearms in?

    Just my .02 if it is a original cardboard box snug in the ship box I agree I would fear the PO will man handle it and crush it, if it were a plastic pistol box I wouldn't be as concerned.

    That said if you can go up a size you can usually scrounge some foam shipping stuff from anywhere that gets lots of stuff in, in my case a hospital :)

    You defiantly want some cushioning. That can be Styrofoam, although most people on the receiving end despise the pellets (they make a mess), old egg cartons (which I happen to like), or crushed brown paper or newspaper. I suggest a minimum of 2 inches of packing material around the contents, more would be better. Be sure to use s study corrugated cardboard box for shipping. A flimsy box, one which is not corrugated, won't stand up to the harsh realities of package handling.

    Put it inside another box. I ship thousands of packages a month. Trust me, the $4-5 more you spend on additional shipping for a larger box is worth it every single time.

    I have shipped guns in the same shipping box but outside of their original box. I take the original box and all the paperwork and put it empty in the bottom of the shipping box. Then wrap the gun in something soft(like a towel) and put that on top. Stuff the shipping box with bubble wrap or paper and seal it up.

    One more vote for inside another box.

    The one time I sold a rifle and shipped it - a Belgian SA-22 in 22 Short- I bought a $5 thick padded soft case, broke gun down in its halves, folded case over on itself with a half in each side, and then put it in a heavy duty cardboard box.

    For a non-takedown rifle, I'd spend the $ on a cheap hard case and then pack that in a box... IF the buyer is willing to pay for over packing.

    And sellers, FWIW... I'd cheerfully pay an extra $15-20 to get a cheap hard case with my purchase. Think you can get the cheap plano cases for $10-ish each whole sale and they come in an appropriate cardboard box.... Just disclose it in the auction listings as part of the shipping cost.

    bubble wrap is your friend, wrap the gun and place in the original box. wrap that box in bubble wrap and place in a bigger box. fill in and extra space with crushed paper or 'peanuts'.

    I was wondering where I'd get a box that's shaped correctly but I didn't even think about the hard Plano cases. And they have them at Walmart for 10$ plus ... depending. https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/plano-rifle-cases I can order it and it will can ship to the local Walmarts for free. I go there several times a week anyway.

    Just keep the foam in the Plano box away from the finish of the gun. Wrap it in plastic or Saran. The foam can spot the bluing and in wet climates can hold moisture next to the metal.
