Winchester Model 90
Back in '94 I was at a farm auction that had a few guns and there was a Win. Model 90 in excellent shape. It was in 22 long rifle and the barrel was stamped STAINLESS STEEL. The barrel was not blued. I have never seen another like it and figured someone had removed the bluing and stamped it. If they did, they did a fine job because it matched the factory quality. It went for over $500 so someone thought it was special.
Was it the real deal?

They did some stainless barrels.

Winchester first offered Stainless barrels as an option starting in the 1920's. One of the problems is they didn't come shiny stainless, they were painted with "Japanese Black", that eventually started to flake and wore off. When they got to that point, guys either rattle can painted them, or cleaned it all off.

Thanks for the info!

Winchester offered Stainless Steel barrels for all models in production from September 1926 through December 1930. The Model 06 in the picture below still has most of its original black Japanned finish.
