    I bought a tipton "best gun vise" then also a tipton ultra gun vise .

    but no report I have not got to use them yet have not been out shooting for some time now

    both seem to be decent reviews I read most liked them but a few did not like the plastic and said it broke easy ( my guess they trying to gorilla tighten down the clamps ) bought both mine on the secondary market one a thrift store one on flea bay saved about 50.00 each

    Here is my new gun vise which is much different than my old one. The species I used were black walnut and maple which has a nice contrast together. Let's go over all the details that I incorporated into it.

    NN, do you use the Hyskore to help sight in your rifles? I've been thinking of getting something like this to lock the rifle on target then adjust the scope to the group. You do a lot more of this than I do so if your using it it should work for my needs.

    I use these for nearly everything.

    I do use them for bore sighting but I never, ever shoot from them. I have a concrete bench with a Maxi Rest and a Labradar set up that I shoot from. I have backstops at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600. Paper at 1,2,3 and steel at 4,5,6.

    These rests reside in the shop most of the time and one goes out for bore sighting. They work great for adding rails, bases and scopes.

    I have used the Tiptons many times in my work and the shop . My home setup is equipped with a custom designed vice I built from a set of plans from an old nra magazine . My camera is broke or I would show some pictures

    I subscribe on-line to Midway sales and recently got a email notice, gun vise they ran a sale on the Tipton and throwed in a Free Wheeler 43 piece gunsmith screwdriver set, with free shipping for around $65.

    This is the Tipton BEST gun vise (not really the Best one this is just the name)

    and lists for around $100 model  181181 and the Wheeler lists around $30.

    I glass bed rifle stocks and mount and change scopes, tinker with gunsmithing usually use a Padded Black and Decker old model fold up workmate. I can fold it up and set in corner when not needed. The Plastic 181181 tipton is light and will be great for use when cleaning a bore and mounting scopes. It does not clamp (secure)the front of the stock or barrel down If you are going to do a lot of aggressive stuff and want to leave the vise in place on the work bench or have a good storage area when removing the vise I would go with a better unit, maybe the Tipton Ultra or build one myself.

    AND in my opinion if anyone needs to shoot from a gun VISE or lead sled to check the accuracy on a gun and adjust a scope they need to do some practicing shooting. (from a bench rest)

    Think about this. (shooting from a gun vise) Would you want to put your rifle's stock against a brick wall as a backup and shoot the rifle? (good way to break things including the stock)

    This is what I stated originally, no sleds or vises. We found the same with handguns when tested in the Ransom Rest.

    It's the way the rifle reacts when held by the body and not some artificial support, especially under recoil. Rigidity of a support does not insure small groups or accuracy from a rifle or handgun held in a vise, sled or mechanical rest.

    Could never find one that fit all so....................

    Made my own with wood, also made adjustable blocks with Velcro so I can fit ARs, short rifles, bolt guns, and autos. perfectly.

    The stock is held in place by a large Harbor Freight C clamp with a leather covered block on the screw end. Unbeatable.

    To be clear in my post I wasn't discussing shooting from the vise, I was discussing making visual adjustments after locking the rifle in position. I recently lined up a friends AR 15 with both scope and laser. If I had something to lock the rifle in it would have saved some time and a little ammo. Of course it is not necessary but it would save some time. That can help when you have to load up and travel somewhere to sight in rifles. Sometimes I line up several rifles in one trip. Saving 10-15 minutes on each rifle would make a difference.

    Then of course using it for gun work, scope mounting, cleaning etc. would make things easier and save time as well. I have a cheap vise that helps with that but a better one couldn't hurt.

    I can and do shoot from a bench . However , I have a lead sled that sees frequent use . Some days I have 7 or 8 rifles that may need to be sighted in . Lead sled helps me get close then I finish from the bench . My home built vice is wonderful for scope work

    Your decision should be based on what projects this vise will be use for. If it's just cleaning, any of the less expensive vises will work.

    However, if you need to be able to level the rifle in the vise for scope work and bore sighting, the Hyskore is the one to use. Here is their website explanation with much clearer photographs:

    I like using my Uncle Buds Bull Bag for sighting in rifles it's not the best gun vise though
