Phil Niekro passed away
Phil Niekro, Hall of Fame knuckleball pitcher, dead at 81
Legendary knuckleball pitcher Phil Niekro died Sunday, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced. He was 81.
I remember watching him pitch for the Braves back in the β80βs. Every game was on TBS. One of the TBS announcers nicknamed him Knucksie, a play on his name and his knuckle ball pitches.

I was on the Atlanta Braves ground crew in 1969. When it rains, a dozen guys roll out a big 3 foot diameter piece of steel pipe, 40 feet long, that has a huge tarp rolled up around it.
I was one of those guys.
I got to watch Phil pitch for free from the right field fence. He was a hell of a pitcher.

My screen name is in honor of Phil, the only man I ever saw that threw slower and more junk than me π but it was his brother Joe while pitching for Houston was caught with one in his back pocket during a game and was suspended π, like the old coaches always says " if you ain't cheat'en you ain't trying ". Both were credits to baseball, may both RIP.

Junkballer, correct me if wrong, catchers hate knuckleballers because they donβt know where the ball is going and have to chase down a lot of passed balls.

Your correct, even the pitchers don't know where it's going when it's released, everyone hates it including the umpires π. It moves very much like a butterfly as it flies and about the same speed too.....π

As Bob Uecker was quoted as saying on Johnny Carson: βThe way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling, then go pick it up.β π
