Santa was early..................

Saw Santa yesterday.

Had called a friend who owns a gun / LE supply shop about 20 miles from me. Tim is my go to guy for my gunpowder. Asked if by the strangest of chances, might he have a can of W231? He said he did. Told him I'd stop over in a day or so.

Stopped in yesterday and he goes in back and comes out with a 8 pounder!!!!!! He says, "Thought you'd rather have this then the single 1 pound container I had. WOW!!! I'm rich !!! There is a Santa !!!!!! This will keep 'da wife and our boys in 9mm loads for awhile.

    Had a buddy ask if he could "borrow" a can of H335 until he could replace it

    I went to my stash and all i had were 8 pounders

    He said Thank you Santa ☺️

    just how long would an 8lb can last?? I barely use a pound a year, would an opened can last the roughly 8 years it would take for me to use it up, only reason I ask I have chance to buy some from older gent getting rid of his reloading stuff.....

    For me, this 8 pounder will be gone well with in a year.

    Was looking for a pound of W231 to make up a batch of 9mm cast round nose, a plinking load for the boys and 'da wife.

    A pound of W231, using 4.0 grains, is 1750 loads, if you don't spill any.........

    But, with 8 pounds, now I'm good to load .45ACP, so it will go pretty fast.

    How long does powder last? That is a question that has been asked many times. Don't know. Stored properly, a long, long time. Still working on the last of a 3 pound coffee can that a gent I knew years ago, filled it up from a card board drum that had 4831 in it, that was from years ago when Hodgdon shipped WWII surplus in 50 gallon drums by Rail Road Express. The powder still is as good today as it was back then.

    So, an unopen can, stored properly, SHOULD be good. Open the can, should be clean, smell a little bit like a solvent. If there is dust, rust inside the can, or the powder smells rotten, it has gone bad. The smell will make your nose curl.

    Very nice, I treated myself to about 40 lbs of powder this week including a four pounder of 231.
