There were two variations of these gadgets: one was the "Defender," which was more defense oriented, and this model; the "Hunter," which was intended to dispatch small trapped animals- or perhaps an overly aggressive fish. Following WWI, many thousands of these were sold for around 5 bucks. As an interesting aside, the German spies who came ashore on the Atlantic coast early in WWII had one of these knife-guns in their kit.
The National Firearms Act classifies knife-guns as Any Other Weapons, but many early examples have been deregulated and are classified as Curio and Relic pistols.
