Gew 98 Ammo Safety question
hello, i have a gew 98 made by J.P Sauer and Sohn, Suhl 1916. need to know if i have to be careful of the 8mm ammo that i put in this thing? i have some yugo and egyptian surplus made in the 80's. bullet diameter seems a little large on the muzzle test? where told some of these have soft receivers? please advise, thanks

.323 thousand, is nominal diameter for 8 X 57mm military ammo made since at least 100 years. That said I heard bad things about the Egyptian ammo in general. Yugo 7.62 X 39, I've shot in SKS's. Was OK but exsteamly corrosive. I wouldn't worry about the yugo 7.92 X 57. But pass on the Egyptian

Rufe, I think his concern is with the J .318 bore VS S .323 bore.
Redman, your Gew98 is good to go with any 8x57 ammo. This was mainly an issue with the Gew88 rifles, and commercial Mausers. The 88's that were modified from the J bore to the S bore have an "S" stamped on the barrel/receiver. 98's were standardized in 1905. Your 1916 Gew98 was made with the S bore.
Yugo surplus has a thick hard primer, and if your firing pin spring has weakened any, you'll have misfires. Lift the bolt and close it, and it re-cocks the gun. Usually the 2nd hit will set it off. Factory spring was 19lbs, Wolff makes a 22lb that'll set them off every time. Anything heavier just makes the bolt harder to operate, and makes for faster wear.
Egyptian ammo was loaded in the 1950's, most of it was poorly stored, and it's rare you get any, that all works. Usual case is misfires from dead primers, or hang fires. It's often confused with Turk ammo, and Turk all goes bang, but kicks like a mule. If you post a pic of the head stamp, I can tell you what it is.
