some years ago i set corner posts on a property i own...they were chunks of used power poles about 13-14' long and hole dug 8' deep to set them, leaving about 5' or so exposed...they were not dripping preservative and not end splintered either but in decent condition ....always wondered if coating the exposed end with a black gold type brush on tar would help preserve them or leave them clear to ??breathe??..just curious if there was a or any diff in longevity ???thanx

    paint one and you will have the comparison you need.......

    We used the same post, it's already preserved but we did cover the tops with sheet metal and bent it a few inches down the side and nailed it down in place to shed water off, still standing 5 + decades..........8 ft. deep for a post ?? that's DEEP !

    I don’t know about treated posts, but locust posts seem to rot right at ground level.

    If it is a remnant of a power pole it has already been treated and should last a long time.
