It's no longer made, and $50/box for good 338 ammo isn't uncommon at all.

That is supposed to be the cats meow ammo. 50 is reasonable for the 338 which you can't say cheap and 338 in the same sentence.

I hunted with a 338mag for 35 years and Win Failsafes were the most reliable ammo I ever used.
They would punch through a moose and stop at the far skin in perfect mushroom. They shot completely through blackbears but left large bloody holes.
Just the best.

The bullet had it's limits like most bullets, there were some issues with expansion at distance as velocity decreased, depending on caliber and cartridge of course . They were also expensive to make. Some of the stuff now is better or at least just as good.
