Mine is an M1 carbine. There is a collectors board you can find on line. I have a lot of references on the carbine, but nothing otherwise specific to Saginaw.

I had an uncle that worked there many years ago. Don't remember him ever mentioning building any rifles though.

Being the joker that I am, I wonder if those steering gear made M-1's pulled to the right when fired? 😜

Saginaw was producing machineguns and 37mm cannons well ahead of Peral Harbor in a dedicated gun factory known as Gun Plant #1. In 1943 Saginaw began building carbines is a second factory called, naturally, Gun Plant #2. These two facilities were completely separate from the automotive division, much like the GB auction site is totally separate from the GB forums...of course I can't seem to convince the disgruntled forum newbies of that!

Decent reference for who made M1 carbines, dates, numbers, markings, etc.

Wow! Did I see both a comma and period? You must be exploring new regions of your keyboard.

Underwood production in that serial range runs between July 1943 and February 1944. Your serial number is relatively high in the Underwood block, so I'm guessing late '43. There should be a production date stamped on the top of your barrel. That date could serve to narrow it down a bit further.
