Use a handheld propane torch and bottle. IMO, the best way to clean a spark arrestor screen in gas powered equipment. just burn it until all of the buildup is gone, and don't burn the screens. Simple, easy way to do it...

You might want to take a peek down the chimney and see how much creosote is there. Your cap issue would depend on what kind of screen. If it's stainless steel and heavy grade you could try p-thinner or laquer thinner. Would the screen hold up to just burning it off? I think I'd start with a wire brush.

Wear gloves and protective equipment. Creosote is bad stuff, carcinogenic. We had a state office building, in the city I use to live in. The external surface, had decorative/cosmetic pier pilings that had been cresoted.

After the powers that be, were appraised of the carcinogenic dangers of creosote. It was closed. I don't know if they tore it down? I had left prior to their decision. It was a fairly new multi story office building. Probably less than 10 years old. I always wondered what happened to the Einstein, who made the decision about the cresoted pier pilings?

Oven cleaner,....let it sit for a minute and the creosote will wipe right off with a paper towel.

Hmmnn,.................... I was agreeing with Toad67 about burning it off. I will have to remember and try Oven Cleaner.

I guess it also depends on how thick it is.

There are some jobs that aren't worth doing yourself. Pay a professional; he will have the training, equipment, & PPE to do the job safely & correctly.

If creosote were as dangerous as "they" say it is, all of us old and current pole jockeys (linemen) would be long dead. I've had the skin on the inside of my forearms peel off more than a few times.

Thanks again for all the replies guys. My chimney is fine now. It's just the SS cap screen that I need to clean. What about fuel oil and a wire brush? I normally wouldn't ask these questions but I no longer can climb ladders and need to ask someone to come over to remove and then replace the cap. I want him to do this in one trip.

On mine which is kinda rigid type expanded stainless steel I can just gently peck on it with a wire brush and gently use the stiff wire brush on the inside and outside.

If you screen is clogged the chimney needs attention. That cresote on your screen did not just grow in place. It came from the chimney. I have a heavy made bristle brush on some rods that screw together that I bought at Lowes and it does a really good job.

I tried one of them cresote burning logs from Lowes and wal-mart and they work ok if you just follow directions. Use it as the last thing of the season then couple weeks later use the chimney brush.

The cresote burning log made the cresote in the chimney come off lots easier when using the brush. Don't just trust the cresote burning log as a cleaner by itself. Read it's instructions.

Indicates to clean the chimney after the log has been used.

If you have ever seen a chimney fire and the house did not burn down you will not put off cleaning a chimney. I clean mine at least twice in the winter time. I burn wood and all wood will create cresote in a chimney. (do not believe what some people say that some wood is clean burning, it's BS and if you notice these type people have brown lips and it won't wipe off, it's a permanent thing, like a politician's lips)
