The quote is attributed to Admiral David Farragut during the Civil War at the Battle of Mobile Bay.

  Alabama - August 5, 1864

Steam ahead  or Speed ahead ????

An extensive internet search revealed  that either verb will take you to the same place.

Speed has a slight edge.
