First, NEVER ketchup or mayo. Any kind of mustard is fine, and is the base layer for all that follow. Onion optional on all.
    Sauerkraut
    Chili w/ or w/o cheese
    Pickle relish (I prefer dill)
    Jalapeno slices
I like my hot dogs fairly simple, no "Chicago" style mishmash of stuff. It should center on the meat and soft bun (not toasted) with a condiment or two to amplify but not hide the meat.

#1 Slaw Dog. Mustard, onion, good southern tangy slaw.

#2 Sauerkraut dog. Just some good Sauerkraut good to go.

#3 Chili Dog. Light mustard, heavy onion, beanless (gasp) chili.

#4 Reg dog. Mustard and onion.

#5 Hot dog. Jalepeno's & mustard. (Try some sweet pickled Jalepeno's for a bonus.)

#6 add cheese to any of the above, if you remember it, have it. Shredded sharp cheddar #1.

Never, ever mayonnaise or ketchup, unless ketchup is all that is available. Then I will choke one down.

    Mayonnaise? Oh **** No.

I had never heard of baked beans on a hot dog, but upon reflection it's just a beanie weinie on a bun. Have at it!

If the hot dog is a good one, I like them on a bun or bread with just butter.

A hot dog done right has ample yellow mustard and a touch of ketchup with a splash of pickle relish and onions.

growing up in Wva in the 50s, 60s  when you ordered a hotdog it came with chilli, cole slaw, mustard, and onions unless you specified otherwise.  so to me those are the best toppings.  and never ever, ever, ever, ever ketchup.

Sorta like pizza, the dough makes a big difference.  FRESH poppy seed bun, NO ketchup nor mayo but small amounts of onion, relish, toms and mustard.  GOOD dill pickle and maybe a hot pepper on there side.
