  Your 4 digit  serial number with "a" suffix, denotes manufacture in mid 1943. Per "FN Browning Pistols", by Vanderlinden.

  Pre-war records were destroyed in WWII bombing runs. Just to make it harder, they were serialed in blocks, not sequentially, and some serial number blocks were for police units. There are ways to date them by the proof codes, or at least narrow it down to a couple of years. Scroll down to post #6 here:
