In my truck- the factory trailer brake is very similar and the knob looking thing adjust the brake control for the trailer.

The 2 knobs at the top will activate the trailer brakes without using the vehicle brakes when they are squeezed together. The plus and minus buttons will adjust the pressure on the brake shoes so you can fine tune it depending on the load.

I did some research and found this photo and possible explanation. Answer appears to be for a ..... Credit card or parking pass. In other words nothing. We both thought it may be some kind of programming port or something but it seems to be nothing.

I think that's because yours has the 4WD selector there. This truck has the tried and true floor mounted lever for the transfer case.

Squeeze the two knobs together where the slot is. That will manually stop the trailer

That slot is not a slot for anything,, just a cut out for the right "lever" to move left to engage the brakes by hand.

On a Chevy, it’s a slot to put nickels and dimes in. :'(

Nope mystery solved ! , but thanks everyone that replied. It is just a slot, that's all. It has nothing to do with vehicle operation. If you don't have a trailer brake. and your selector is on the floor , there is a little cubby there, so there actually is 3 possible looks to that left side upper panel of the dash on that year / model.
Found this on a GM forum:
