    why would you do that.  me personally,  i would rather throw a flat iron on the fire and cook on it.  that will keep all those savory juices from being consumed by the fire.

    We do it quite often. When your coals are right, it's fine. It's just cooking steak. Maybe a bit different than you're used to, but with the same result

    I do it quite a bit like it,  but coat my meat with a paste of mustard and coarse salt.  Apply it as thick as the paste permits.  Throw it on the coals and the coating will harden and trap in the juices.  Depending on the size of the piece of meat turn it only once with maybe a minute or  two more than the cave man steak.  When you remove it from the coals,  give it a hard crack and the coating will fall off.  the meat will melt in your mouth and flavor will be perfect.

    I like to hang my steak from a green stick dangled over a good bed of coals.

    Not since I went camping with a buddy and he forgot to bring the frying pan !!!!!  But we made out OK

    Not steak but we caught catfish one night, skinned it, and cooked it in a open top beer can in the campfire. Drunks will eat about anything.

    I can remember many of the old-timers talking of making fires from dried bovine excrement. No thanks
