Remington 552
I squirrel hunted with it the other morning and have to say I like it. I was thinking of putting a better scope on it but it is so accurate and already set up I'm just going to leave it alone. With the long barrel it's quieter than some others and I like that too.
I have a 550-1 and I think I'll mount a scope on it and just use it for 22 shorts, though the 552 will shoot shorts setting each gun up is an idea that appeals to me. The 550-1 will also run cb's which is plain fun to shoot for anyone. One of the problems is finding plain 22 shorts. Most companies are marketing 22 short high velocity which cracks like a 22 lr, you may as well just shoot a lr. I used to buy 22 short hollow points and squirrel hunt with them, I haven't seen those for years other than high velocity.
The 22 I shoot the most is a Winchester 67A with 27" barrel. Just chamber what you want a LR, Short, CB.

Try subsonic 22lr. I love them for plinking and hunting. They kill humanly, are quite and accurate. I shoot them out of all my 22's and they will cycle in some of the autoloaders I have.
Remington and Agulia are the brands I like the best.I have a Browning BLR-22 with a 2x7 Leupold on it that is a real killer. For most of my shooting I have a Romanian Trainer with irons and it is my goto rifle. With the SS ammo its a little louder than a pellet rifle and if I am shooting CCI Quite ammo its real quite.

I've got a nice Marlin 81DL. it took me years of looking to find all the magazine lifter parts in order to make it functional. (Was from my Dad, and it was missing all those parts.) Tube fed. It's got high quality peep sights on it. My Son is deadly accurate with it.
I've been unable to make it function with shorts. (Even after a trip to the gunsmith to look it over.) Supposed to take S, L, LR. (Bummer cause it will hold about 20 shorts.) I've got roughly 1K of standard velocity shorts.
Can only use them single shot. 😢

Love those kinds of rifles. I just researched the value of the Rem 582 I bought NIB for $65 back in '83 and was gobsmacked by what it's worth today. I had it drilled and tapped for better bases than tipoff, and have a rare Burris 4x-Mini/AO rimfire scope on it. It shoots eensy-weensy groups at 50 yards, and no ground squirrel is safe out to 150.
How ludicrous is it to try to make .22 Shorts into something already perfecting covered by LRs? The whole point of the Short is a supremely accurate, quiet, sub-sonic round.

I've shot some of the subsonic ammo and have been thinking of just using it when I would normally use a short. The 552 and the 550-1 will cycle them, the difference is bullet weight 29gr vs 36-40gr but that's not much of an issue really. I use CB's a lot particularly around my house. I live outside the city limits (barely) but have neighbors close enough that if I need to shoot something a CB is usually the best option. I have a box of the CCI quiet I'll have to see how well my rifles shoot them.
A friend of mine had one of the Romanian Trainer rifles and it shot real well.0 -
I wish you were close by I have a lot of the Agulia SS ammo and would give you some to see if you liked it. I have found it to be be real accurate.
CB's and Short Standard Vel ammo is almost impossible for me to find at a reasonable cost and the HV Shorts are loud. I have a Winchester 71 in 22 Short only and it is as loud as a 22lr plus more expensive to shoot. I think I paid $10 per 100 for HV Shorts last time I bought some.I only have 1 22 Autoloader(I like Lever and bolt guns better) and its a 10/22. It will cycle the SS ammo fine. The Quite ammo is not 100% in it.I have found that in a handgun it is all loud.

Also have quite a few of the Aguila SS ammunition. It is quiet, very accurate and has a 60gr. Bullet weight. I keep a Buckmark Micro loaded with it. (The 60gr. Bullet weight is a bonus to me.)

I've seen the Aguila 60gr quiet stuff and wondered how it would shoot. I'll have to round some up the next time I see it reasonable. I have seen some Aquila made shorts that were not HV. I may have to get some of those too. While I'll buy anything for pinking CCI is my go to hunting ammo for .22's. I used to buy the Remington short hollow points but it's been years since I seen those. 0 -
I ordered 1000 rounds of CB's and 2000 rounds of CCI LRHP when the last buying panic ended, still wasn't cheap but I needed them. When prices got down to normal I stocked up on other 22 ammo for plinking and target practice. 0 -
Pretty sure the Standard velocity shorts I have, are also Aguila. Cost the same or more than high end LR's.

Try some cci cb longs. quiet, and accurate. Feeds fine in a ruger 77/22. Great for small pests.0

Ihave a couple of the 550-1'S. Mine will cycle CCI CB Longs semi auto. Sounds like it has a good suppressor. 0 -
I had a beautiful 552BDL high gloss monte carlo type stocked version. It was a sweet shooter too. When I moved to Oklahoma, my car was stolen and it and a couple others just happened to be in there. I've considered getting another ever since though I have enough .22's. 0 -
I bought a used 552 and 572 about 30 some years + ago took them all apart cleaned than up nice and now sad to say I have never fired the first round in either one just kept putting it off or something else would come along and they would get left at home .
I had other 22"s that seemed to be the one I went to when shooting
great looking 22's why I bought them I like the fact they really look more Like a full size rifle than 220 -
Them 550-1 are normally good 22 auto's for shorts through LR and usually accurate.
I've only seen one that shot a bad group and it had a small bulge about 1/2 inch long in the barrel about half way. One had lodged in the barrel and I'm guessing the following rounds gave it a push, but bulged the barrel.
I replaced the barrel and installed a standard size Weaver base for a 1 inch rifle scope. Some of the first 550's did not have a grooved receiver for scope mounting. Easy to drill and tap mount a scope base once the bolt is removed and looks factory if done correct..0
