We used to sell a lot of gift certificates at the gun shop/range, especially around the holidays. One thing I insisted on was no expiration date. The damn money the customer paid didn't expire.

The "Manager" honored it, as I knew he would. At first he was holding his ground. I explained I had bought my Jeep there, had all my Service work done there, had referred Customers there etc. " How can Service work I have pre-paid for Expire? Did my $$ Expire?"

I asked him, "Do you really want to lose me as a Customer over the price of an oil change?" That did it.

What was interesting was the guy to my left was also being told just then his Pre-paid Oil changes had "Expired." I was the 1st guy the Manager had to speak to when he came in. I would imagine the guy to my left, while we were having the conversation, would be #2

    Unbelievable.

I spent 9 years turning wrenches in factory dealerships, Chrysler and GM and one thing I can tell you is they all suck. They lie for a living and they get sued a lot and they loose a lot.

I worked for a Nissan dealership up North for two months. (Worst job I've ever had.) I quit. When I quit, I told the General Manager "I could not Lie to people every day, and go home feeling good about myself."

I only put 5K/year on my Jeep. (2010, only 45K on it.) I roll miles on my little commuter car. The Dealership wanted me to "change oil every 3mo. or 3K miles, whichever came 1st." We already had that conversation a long time ago.

"You guys try to buy my Jeep everytime I come in here, because I keep it low miles, and in excellent condition. Now I am going to be penalized for that?"

    I don't think so.

I have had stuff like that happen to me several times in the past.  The good thing is most humans don't have ESP, because if people could read my mind they would run away screaming.

Your a better man than I am because I don't do well in a situation like that.

Having been a Customer Service Manager for apprx. 23 years at one of the Largest Outdoor Adventure Equipment Retail locations in the Country, I was constantly amazed how many people approached me in a Hostile manner. I am the guy who is going to attempt to solve your problem.

I would stand there steaming inside, slowly saying to myself "Strike One, Strike Two, Strike Three - Your Out of Here." I had a lot of discretion on if, and how I was going to help you. 🤔

I try very hard to keep that in mind when I interact with a Manager deciding my fate. I can ratchet it up if need be, and will if provoked. I try to start out calm and keeping my voice down, attempting to be non-confrontational if at all possible.

I have a little experience with that. The folks who buy a tent and sleeping bags on Friday and return them on Monday because they were done with them. The guy who buys expensive hunting boots and destroys them laying asphalt and wants to return them because they didn't hold up. We had a strict no return policy on guns or a bunch would have come back the day after hunting season. Liked the people I worked with and most of the customers but don't miss the hassle from the few that try to take advantage. As far as your oil change goes honoring the prepay would have been a no brainer and I am surprised it even had an expiration date. Bob

Bob, my friends all said I should write a book based on the time I helped Manage this $17million/year Store. The stories I could tell.

We called em' "No Charge Rentals." Unbelievable what things and why people would want to return used non-defective items. (This was in Paramus, NJ. about 20 miles outside NYC.) Attitude X 10.

We had a dealership near HQ that was so bad we had a stack of report forms on the desk already filled out with their information. It was one dirty trick after another & their expression was that, "they scalded another one." We tried along with the county prosecutor's office to hammer them but the state did nothing. Then they screwed over an employee who had kept a file box full of incriminating paperwork. They were fined $250,000 & had to pay restitution to many clients. They shut down not long after that.
