Son, about to learn a harsh message -
Texted him yesterday about what I thought was a good deal. The S&W mdl 916 12ga pump at a BIN of $225. Texted him shortly after, not to consider it. (Thankfully some knowledgable Members weighed in, and waved me/him off.)
He texted me back, could I help him purchase it, or something similar.
He lives in Denver, Co. Was a Liberal, but has come around to see the light in the last two years. Has lived in Liberal States, where I could not hook him up. (NY, NJ, MA, CO. etc.)
Have sent him a few texts this AM about the need to plan ahead. Telling him things are going for 2-3X the normal price, IF you can find them. Told him, "You are coming to the game WAY late. I have been talking to you about this for years. Told him, you are looking at apprx. $600 for a nice 12/20 ga pump just now.
Reality is a Be otch.

There are still some reasonable offers on full size 12ga pumps on the auction side. Not cheap but not crazy. I am on my tablet and can't do links but saw Benelli Nova for 400 BIN and Mossberg Maverick for 300 BIN. Anything that says tactical is crazy high but it is better to have a standard pump than no pump at all. Bob 0 -

There are plenty of 12 gauge pumps listed. Many of them have penny openers, but most listing with a Buy It Now are in the $400+ range. There are some good shotguns which will likely end up selling at reasonable prices, but your son is going to have to put in some work to get one of them. Although it is never too late, it is too late to make the process easy. 0 -
Yes sir Ken the 916 is one of the WORST shotguns built, period. Yes, he is very late to the party but sometimes you can get a sow and go home. Hopefully he will prevail. 0 -
What irks me, is that I have tons of stuff I can hook him up with. I am not willing to do so at 2-3X the price. If you waited so late in the game to do so, like everybody else, you get to pay the price/consequences. I TRIED talking to him about this for years. Now that things are getting ugly he reaches out for a Hail Mary?

i will comment more to the philosophical part of your post. OUR CHILDREN. one of my worst feelings in life is trying to advise my children and they ignoring my advise. case in point, my youngest daughter had two children a year apart, not married, didnt finish school, a h-e-l-l of a hole to try and dig out of. had the first child, and i yelled ,begged, pleaded, cried, spoke softly with great foresight and wisdom advising her not to have another one, three months later pregnant again. so Ken all you can do is to advise and help where possible, but usually they are going their own way. it hurts your heart but one thing i have learned for sure: saying I told you so serves no purpose. 3 -
I've told my son that all he has to do is ask, and I will give him whatever he thinks he needs. Right now it is not his thing. Have taken him out to the range a couple of time to practice with a revolver that was a birthday gift.
It things get dicey, the armory is open and range time is available so he can protect the grand-kids.

I image its a bit hard to say no to your son but tough love is called for some times
I hope or tend to agree there has to be a standard 12 ga mossberg 500 or a rem 870 to be had with a little effort looking still with in reason maybe not a safe queen however and a 2.00 hack saw blade and couple minutes a 20 " barrel is waiting to be freed up and it would do the job needed
my youngest son got bit by the gun bug and his wife took a real liking to them when she met him , funny it shocked her parents ( they had guns but she never had much interest ) now she has her own guns , flip side my oldest son has a ruger 10-22 I gave him when he was about 16 , he really has no interest in adding any more , but then again he ( well both sons ) know I will give them what ever they want I have and besides they will get them some time any way .
as for the 916 I had one when I was a lot younger and on a buying spree of different guns, I had a S&W there version of a 1100 do not remember the model and the 916 . never even put a shell thru it at that time many years ago I loved to trade so next couple gun show both were gone

I'd tell him to get this 2 barrel set Maverick 88 12 gauge for $449.00 buy it now.
The short barrel for home defense / deer and the long barrel for small game hunting.
Price is about double what it was but still.

We are discussing just that in a seperate thread Iceracerx. (Private Individual Shipping a Shotgun.) My understanding is that it must still go through an FFL.

You can only lead a horse to water but you can't make 'em drink. I'd tell him to rough it until November and buy what the dem/lib unloads their gats at losing money rate.
If you're gonna give him a shotgun he better be able to swing the price of the paper work. That's way cheaper than a $500 12 gauge. Good luck on finding/buying shells.
