Well I tried to keep an open mind

and I think I did. I use a knife at least once a day and usually more. I have several good quality knives within reach pretty much wherever I am working and they all have two things in common; they are all sharp and they are all straight edge. Well for some reason I have a very nice all stainless Spyderco Police Model knife with a 3 1/2" serrated blade that I have tried to use for a week instead of my usual blades. My conclusion?? Maybe if I was cutting rope or webbing and only that, then maybe it would be useful but for everyday stuff?? Not so much. For opening boxes, cutting packing material, opening apples, and all the other things I use a blade for, the plane edge knives are so much better. Just my opinion but the Spyderco goes in a drawer out of the way.

    Same experience. My brother had a drawer-queen serrated Spiderco that he gave me many years ago. It's now my drawer-queen knife. Looks cool, but nowhere near as utilitarian as a plain edge.

    Serrated blades have a place, but in my case that is the kitchen. All of my carry knives have a plain edge and it is likely to stay that way. Over the years I have been given full and half serrated edc knives and have gifted them all away. Lately I have shelved my mini-griptilian and have gone old school With a Hen and Rooster 3 blade pen knife. May not be as good for self defense but it is hardly noticeable in my pocket. Bob

    I totally agree.  The serrated has it's place for heavy duty cutting of some materials, but for everyday use around the house or in the field the plain straight edge is better..  I tried a serrated edge to bone out a deer and quickly found it did not cut raw meat very well.

    Serrated blades look impressive, if not downright scary, but are lacking in daily practicality. As for boxes, packing materials and strapping; I'm one of those strange characters who uses a box cutter to cut boxes.

    Was given a spyderco serrated blade knife years ago as a gift . Useless till I ground out the serrated area and made a flat blade out of it . Now my favorite edc

    Most of the Spyderco knives I noticed have specific function. The blades are kind a thick so it ain't designed to open apples (at least most of the ones made in the '90s). Let alone peel one. Actually my Solo is an exception.

    My sons bought me a Spyderco with the serrated blade for fathers day a few years ago.I started for work early one morning and my truck had a dead battery and parked at the end of the driveway with the front close to the shrubbery.I could not get another vehicle in front to jump it off,so I was going to pull it out with the tractor far enough to get to the battery. I went in the shop to find a tow rope and found an old tangled piece of rope. I used the Spyderco to cut off a piece of the rope and some how managed to cut both thumbs with one swipe of that knife.

    For that try your wife’s cheese grater. They work like magic. Just don’t let her catch you.

    My benchmades are both the same format - but there is enough of both edge for them to be casual dual purpose EDC blades.

    I like having some nice knives despite my penchant for cheap ones - and amongst the cognisenti there is a certain cache to ticket to the door value inherent in these particular folders.

    I agree that spyderco has a love of thick blade stock and shorter blade lengths and prominent use of serrated edges - and are often oddly task specific in there architecture and execution.

    Where our our pics you lazy hack - we know you have a camera and the ability to post photos.

    Just crop out your feet for heaven's sake.
