    Hard to tell from the picture but I can't see any gills under the cap. If that is the case it is probably a puff ball. Bob

    I was thinking puffball. Very unusual to see puffballs growing out in the open grass.

    I have these grow in my yard every year.  I call them brain mushrooms.  They grow really quick and then turn black.

    Puff Ball, eventually turns black, dries out and becomes Devil's snuff.  (spews black dust when stepped on after it gets black)
    Might be eatable if a fresh puffball and still white inside with no black spots. Might even cure Covid.

    Doesn't really look like  the puff balls I've seen around here, their more white when they first come up, and their white clear through the center.  Now as far as eating a puff ball,    I have sliced and fried them before like you would a moral mushroom, they are kind of bland tasting, the crust was the only thing really tasty about it.

    Used to have a neighbor who hunted all sorts of wild mushrooms. He used to take us along on some of his hunts in the pastures and woods. These he called puffballs because when we found an older one we would stomp on it and a cloud of mushroom spores would be released. Young ones like in your photo were the very best eating of all the mushrooms.

    I agree with Waltermoe,  puffballs around here are white at first anyhow,  and they do grow in grass,  even on a golf course.  Taste like eggs to me.

     I found and ate one last yr.. I forget the name but is a puffball or PB like. As stated, young and pure white only. lol

     I found and ate one last yr.. I forget the name but is a puffball or PB like. As stated, young and pure white only. lol
    When selecting a puffball to eat break it open and if it has black spots inside it's too old for a good taste. Fresh ones are pure white inside and have the mushroom smell.
    I prefer the Hen of the Woods (Wesche) and the morels.

    Euell Gibbons liked pine cones.
