Walthers P22

I never understood about the Walthers P22. The safety is a cam. I get that. Flip the safety on and the cam prevents the hammer from hitting the firing pin. What I have trouble wrapping my head around is this seems like it would create excessive wear on the hammer. Every time you fire it and the slide goes back, the hammer hangs up slightly in that indent between the safety pin ( or cam) and the slide.

Am I seeing thcorrectly

  Hammer is hardened steel. Many, many thousands of round fired, before any appreciable wear. The P 22's don't have the greatest rep for durability. Mostly due, to the great use of Zinc, diecastings, (potmetal). In many of their parts. Because of this, hammer wear, likely  would be the least of your concerns. As far as durability is concerned.

  I believe you are correct about the P22. The slide and frame rails show a little wear.
