    Yes, not a walnut.  I have about 50 of those and although I love trees, one reason I bought this place in '82, I really have to be careful where I park in the drive in the fall.

    There are several different kinds of hickory trees and as many different hickory nuts.   From what you are describing it may be what I call a pignut tree.

    It sounds like what my wife stepped on last year and caused her so many problems. Ours was from a shagbark hickory tree. Does the bark curl out from the tree?

    I just checked the leaves and yes, it's a pignut hickory
