That is a handy tool. The main part is a cant hook, which allows you to easily roll a big log around. I have 2 of them.
If I didn't have a cant hook I wouldn't even put gas in the chain saw.
The other part, the little stand that allows you to roll the log up 10 inches above the ground is pretty nifty. Never have used one of them.0 -

Cant hook is a necessity when you drop a big one, the little stand is arguably useful. You gotta be able to roll them over. If you’re any kind of decent with a saw you can push it through the last bit on the ground to free it from the rest of the downed log so it can be rolled, and you won’t dull your chain. So then you don’t need the stand.
When I’m cutting I always bring 4-5 spare chains, tools and always the pike / cant hook.

A 45 degree slope would be like walking on a 12/12 pitch roof (you're not staying very long) only of course you can get more traction digging your boots into the dirt. If you've need to get logs up a 45 you better have something hooked to it or some timber behind it before you cut it loose. Of course if you want it to go to the bottom that's easier, just make sure you don't go with it.
I can see uses for the tool. Don't know about keeping it handy for use but like most things the more you use it the more you learn how to do with it.0 -
Yep. Steep slopes are great for getting the wood closer to the truck. If it hangs, walk one end around with the pike and get it going again. Now all we need is a way to get the wood to leap into the truck.

I found an old-school peavey on Amazon for $61 with free shipping. Some of them have cast pot metal hooks, this one looks a little stouter. 0 -
ps The video shows the guy using the hook to pick up pieces of firewood. That is just silly. You pick up pieces of firewood with your hand.
As I said above the cant hook is a great tool for rolling logs over and I can't go to work without it.6 -
Not in total agreement Allen, they make a small tongs like an ice tongs that works great for picking up wood. No pulp or wood cutter is without one. I have several different sizes. It saves your back and your gloves. 0 -
