What is the Best Protective Finish for a Mosin-Nagant Stock?

Hello,

I am looking to re-finish my Mosin-Nagant rifle. First I am going to stain the stock for a darker appearance, but what should I use as a protective finish? I am looking for a finish that is scratch resistant and durable, but does not change the stain color and does not cause the rifle to appear too glossy.

  Your particular post war arsenal built MN 91 30 almost certainly has an arctic birch stock treated with (amongst other things) chromium permangenate to prevent warping and rot and water intrusion in extreme cold conditions...

  Some of these chemicals can discolor the wood as much as an inch below the surface - and in these cases refinishing the wood becomes problematic and difficult to the point of near impossibility.

  A pebble textured surface coating or even a bed liner type material can be applied over the existing finish after some surface sanding and scuffing abrasions treatments to provide a tactical more modern appearance.

  This is what I would suggest - IMHO.

  I wouldn't use any abrasive on a Russian stock without full PPE & an N95 mask.
