Back then, some members of the Democrat party still had a few morals. It was well known that Teddy had his eye on the Oval Office and Mary Jo was a complication toward that goal that had to be dealt with.

Back then the Southerners controlled the party.   They have moved on to their resting places and the republican party.

It would change the rumor of an affair into front page headlines putting them in a car together at night.   That's already a lot worse than the rumor of an affair even without the suggestion of foul play.

I think this thread does belong in GD forum rather than Politics forum because it's about events that were in the headlines more so than the politics.  My whole point was it may not have been politics that caused the incident.

Yep, I'm confident nobody has ever been "silenced" over politics or a political matter. (end green font)
How is it "silenced?"  More like "publicized."  Does anybody not know her name and who she was with, 52 years later?  So it may have been about her having information.

Geez?!?! Killed, snuffed, "silenced," all the same meaning. Of course she had "information," enough to get her whacked.
How does it make sense to do what they did to keep the public from learning about their affair when all it did was move it to the front page all over the world?  If it was just about the affair, it would have been more effective for him to quietly stop seeing her.

I know some people want to hate Democrats but I think they would not condone what might be a murder unless they supported his reasons.

She might have been trying to report a scandal or she might have been trying to blackmail her school system.

Any portrayal of her being conscious before Ted Kennedy drove her slowly at 15mph into a place where his car would roll over into water might be incorrect and unfair to her.

She had been a Catholic school teacher.  Suppose she got promoted out of that job to get her out of the way because she had been noticing abuse.  Suppose she tried to use her new job in Kennedy's "boiler room" to speak to him about her suspicions, then got silenced.

Suppose she made it clear she had something important to report and he realized what it must be, then he insisted on her telling him over dinner, then when they were seen together it led everyone to think they were out on a date and that's what their being together had been about.
