strange thunderstorms...........
rolling through now, weird thing the thunder lasts from 10 to at least 30 seconds. had one that I swore someone was rolling a barrel down the street, got up went to door looked out and it still roaring for another good 10 seconds..........

Very strange storms here as well this year. There have been several thunderstorms that consisted of one flash of lightning, one boom, and that was it. Nothing more. Then there have been three very high speed wind storms that lasted no more than a couple of minutes. One was clocked at 102MPH nearby. Another knocked down three of my 10-year old trees. One tree was totally lifted over a fence and tossed into the lake. 0 -
We had a storm last week with that type of rolling thunder. At one point it went on so long I checked out side to make sure it wasn't a tornado. It had that freight train kind of sound. Bob 0 -
We got hit in central VA last night- hail, high winds, heavy rain, lighting every 5 seconds for an hour. Lost power at about 9:45, got it back at 0530. 0 -

It could be sheet or spider lightning. That is cloud to cloud lightning that travels on the underside of stratiform clouds. I remember a particular 4th of July (probably '83) when we were out doing what high schoolers do in states where fireworks were legal at the time. and the lightning was going from horizon to horizon in single bolts and in multiple branches almost continuously for hours. Nothing was hitting the ground and the thunder just rolled on continuously. Reminded me of a scene from Poltergeist.
The other thing it could be is a positive strike. Most lightning is negative discharge cloud to ground. Positive strikes are much more powerful and can hit more than 25 miles from the storm. Check http://www.strikestarus.com/index.aspx?id=70 will show you what is in your area and +/- and IC or CG as well as polarity. The volume of a positive strike close by is impressive and they will roll on for quite a while.0
