Shipping a handgun
I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this so please redirect me to the correct forum if necessary. What is the least expensive way for a non-FFL to ship a handgun to an FFL? If I understand it correctly a non-FFL can only ship via FedEx overnight signature required to a verified FFL's address. Is this correct, or can a less expensive shipping method be used?

I am going through this also. The information a forum member gave me is that if you pay an FFL to ship the handgun, it can be shipped via USPS in a flat rate box. Even paying an FFL his fee, you should still save a ton of money over paying UPS or FedEx their outrageous $80.00+ fee to ship next day. 0 -
As above, I would hope you have a "friendly" FFL you could go to. Mine charges 20 bucks but I help him with many things. Expect to pay 25-40, or , still cheaper than the other route. 0 -
I agree with HPD. Usually your best method.
As stated if you ship it yourself to an FFL you HAVE to use "Overnight."
Yep, badchris makes a good point. Some FFL's will not receive a firearm from a non-FFL.

Another problem you may run into, the receiving FFL won't accept shipments from a non FFL. I had that issue on my last sale so I did what HPD says and went to a dealer and just paid the fees. It was about 1/3 the price of me trying to ship it myself. 3 -
if you find a friendly FFL to ship thru , I would suggest you have the firearm all boxed up but the box NOT sealed, , that way the FFL can check to make sure every thing is correct for his book but is not out a bunch of work getting it ready to go , oh and make sure you have a copy of the receiving FFL license to give to your FFL, he'll need that for his records, If the receiving FFL does NOT want to give you his license then have him send it direct to your dealer 0 -
Thanks for all the answers. I already have a handgun sold via Gunbroker with the overnight shipping option checked. The buyer reached out to me when he saw the cost, I don't blame him. This is the first transaction for both of us via gunbroker so neither one of us really knows how it works. I might just give him the option to cancel the sale if I can do that without incurring a fee. There are IGS near me that will buy directly and or via consignment. I thought gunbroker would be easier. 0 -
If the item sold on GB there will their fees on the sale price. I do not see any reason the sale can't still go through and just use a local FFl to ship through USPS. 0 -
I ship handguns through a local dealer who charges me $50 plus insured USPS fee. And, I think that's a bargain, as I just give him the gun & he packs it & does the paperwork on his computer, which prints out the shipping label. When I list a handgun, I generally charge a flat $40 CONUS; I eat the difference between that & my actual expense. If bidders think that you are overcharging them for shipping, they will avoid your auction.
You must have the receiving dealer email a photocopy of his FFL to your sending dealer, or mail a copy. Without that FFL the sending dealer can't ship.Neal
