Straw purchase ?
Long post but bear with me a minute Weigh in please . Worked a couple of fill in shifts at the local gun store this past week . A couple came , male was looking for a couple of ar’s and several drum magazines . The whole time he is constantly on his phone texting back and forth to some one . Decides on two ar’s and 4 drum magazines . By now my spider sense is tingling . He hands the paperwork to girlfriend to fill out . When asked why he didn’t do the paperwork he said he had no id due to a speeding ticket . Just got a bad feeling all over during the conversation as he never once met my eyes . I told them I did not feel comfortable completing the sale and was not going to go thru with it . They left without argument or comments . My thought was he was most likely unable to pass a background check and he knew this . Please chime in with your thoughts or questions . What would you have done ?

The same thing that you did. When I was selling guns I had several similar occurrences. It may have cost the store a few bucks but I sure slept better. Since when does a speeding ticket deprive you of your I.D.? Bob 3 -

I was in that exact situation five years ago and declined the sale also. I found out later he was a felon. 3 -

I slept well that night . Neither my boss nor myself look good in orange / stripes . Hassle from the guys in cheap suites is not high on my list of things to experience 3 -

just a thought maybe a set up but really if she was paying and doing the paper work her self . he could have just said he was along to help pick out the guns and make sure the gun shop did not take advantage of a woman JMHO .
also my guess next trip in or next GS now they know what not to do stay off the phone look more relaxed . she will do all the talking and "he will be along just to help her pick out " her guns" and get a good deal "0 -

I reckon he was shopping for someone else on the phone. Using his old lady made me think a "biker gang"? They must've been binge watching "Sons Of Anarchy" while under COVID lock down. You would think a drill press, a few jigs and a pallet of 80% for the 1%. 0 -

Any time they hand the paperwork over to a girlfriend you just have to say no. I understand the wife filling things out because the husband is as blind as I am when it comes to forms.....and her pointing to the box for him to sign his name. The guys I know from the ATF have told me that they will send in a test person to see if a store will do an illegitimate sale. I had some guy once that came in the store talking about wanting to buy several AK47's....he sounded like he BARELY spoke English. When I asked him where he was born he said "Berrrr- mean- ham" I told Jimmy if he sold that guy anything I was walking out the door straight to the guy's face....and he left. (It was Jimmy's store.) Sometimes you just have to say no. 0 -

What your describe in your second line is also a violation when it comes to completing the 4473. The 4473 is to be completed only by the transferee, if he is unable then and only then a non interested 3rd party(not with the transferee and not a member of the transferer) has to do it, and even then both have to sign it.Locust Fork said:Any time they hand the paperwork over to a girlfriend you just have to say no. Not making this crap up, I have had 4 inspections in my 20 years now in the business. Takes about a week with 1 or 2 inspectors(not agents like eveyrone thinks people with the ATF are) Had a lot of violations in the early years. Last two went nearly perfect, last one actually didn't result in a single violation! Sometimes I even find myself knowing more than the people they send to inspect us, especially on the whole interstate gun transaction thing.0 -

I'm lucky that we didn't giged when I filled in a 4473 for a friend/customer. Great guy, smart, but illiterate. We went over all the questions, etc. and the boss said something when saw me do it. So as not to embarrass the guy, I simply commented that he forgot his reading glasses. Next to where the buyer would be signing, I noted that he was illiterate. Of course, he couldn't read the notation & the boss was OK with it. 0 -

You did the right thing for the right reasons. WELL DONE SIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A moral decision has to have a moral foundation, it is not just ratting somebody out for trivial reasons. Your sense that something was wrong led you to the right course of action. 0 -

Thanks for the support from everyone . Just knew it was a bad deal all the way around . Girlfriends demeanor was very quiet and subdued , she was very definitely “controlled “ by the boyfriend .

We used to have an inspection here and there.....then for several years they would come every single year to the store for an inspection. I'm certain the number of audits we've seen would be a triple digit number. I've found it all depends on the agent you get as to what they call a violation and what is not. During one of our inspections we had the entire store translating the form into understandable terms (including the inspecting agents who were visiting the store.) One guy will tell you something and you'll see a totally different set of people the next year and they'll tell you totally different information. I don't know how many times we went back and forth about abbreviating "B'ham" on the form. 3 -
I got one local that makes me spell out the month, name of the county with "county" after it (basically double stacked in the space provided) without going out of the box, spell out street, avenue, boulevard, etc. 0 -

You should have told him without an ID he would need to buy his guns on line where you don't need any identification to buy guns and they'll mail them to your house.

If you work in a gun store very long you will see this mess. My guys knew they never had to sell anything if they didn't feel it was right. Another reason you want really good people working the counter. It takes at least two years to train a good gun shop counter person. As I used to say a lot " We ain't selling candy bars". The only thing I will add is that we usually would call the other stores in the area and alert them. Maybe write down the car license number as they drove away. 0 -
Thoughts. Very easily could have been a fishing expedition.Had any smarts the lady would have, oops better stop right here.
