Deadly Elephant Virus Hitting Populations

Wildlife experts believe an unknown pathogen - a novel elephant virus - could be behind the mass deaths.

Aerial shots have shown the massive carcasses strewn across the area near watering holes in an unprecedented die-off that isn't affecting other animals.

Hundreds of elephants have been spotted looking confused, wandering around in circles and then falling onto their faces before dying, Daily Express reports.

To investigate drivers of virus spillover, we evaluated the number of viruses mammalian species have shared with humans. We discovered that the number of zoonotic viruses detected in mammalian species scales positively with global species abundance, suggesting that virus transmission risk has been highest from animal species that have increased in abundance and even expanded their range by adapting to human-dominated landscapes. Domesticated species, primates and bats were identified as having more zoonotic viruses than other species. Among threatened wildlife species, those with population reductions owing to exploitation and loss of habitat shared more viruses with humans.

    that's a bad sign ....a grand species that humans have been wiping out now maybe wholesale die off...i fear my grandkids may never see many off the larger animals unless a zoo is successful in keeping them .....many people are not good for this earth
