Ruger American or Savage Axis

In 308.  I just purchased a ATN thermal night vision and I want to put it on a .308.  Any experience or wise input is appreciated.  I could also just go with a  Picatinny rail on a new Encore 308 barrel but I am thinking a dedicated rifle is the way to go.  What say you?

    We know what your really want is a 9mm Glock.  But if your going to get a rifle I agree with the dedicated set up., that's what I do when I can.   There are several budget rifles out there now.  Machinery has improved so much most of them shoot fairly well within most hunting distances ( that's out to 300 yards IMO, with most shots less than 200).   Buy what you know you'll still want to look at a month from now.

    My LONG shots would be 250 yards with 75-150 most common.  I also have 6MM bullets and .223 but want to avoid the 6.5's because I have a huge stock of the other caliber bullets and don't want to buy a different caliber...

    Between those 2 choices I would go with the Ruger

    Hands down the Ruger American over the Savage Axis. Much better rifle IMO. I like Savage rifles in general, but I would take the Ruger American over the Savage Axis any day. Just my .02 from shooting both. Don

    Ruger, the Axis is butt-ugly!

    Savage rifles beat Ruger rifles for accuracy every time without a lot of aftermarket tuning needed. Ruger might be a tad more rugged but I doubt you'd notice the difference.

    Savage AXIS just seems UGLY to me. Ruger isn't quite as bad.

    I'll throw a vote down for a Weatherby Vanguard 2. I bought one a few weeks back, haven't fired it yet but by appearance and feel and a 24" barrel, I'm optimistic. Nice trigger too.

    +1 The Vanguard and the Howa have always been a bargain. I am hearing good reports on the Winchester XPR but I haven't shot one yet. Friends say good trigger and sub MOA so I'll get around to trying one soon. Bob

    Howa builds the Vanguard for Weatherby and has for the past 30 years or so . Can’t go wrong with either one

    Yep
    See both at the range often. The Savage is superior in accuracy and has a far superior trigger pull than the Ruger. Have fired examples of both a number of times.

    I own one of each in .30-6.   First question is does the Axis have the Accutrigger ?(Not sure how to spell that) ...
    If not, the Ruger trigger is much better, if so I would call them about even.....both of mine are about the same accuracy wise.

    I usually grab the Ruger 1st when I head out to hunt....
