what does this to pines?
Not too knowledgeable about pines/firs, so I figured I'd ask here...
What is this on these trees? I took these pics this weekend in Medicine Bow National Forest (WY). Is it a bear wiping its ass? Is it blight that's been discolored and plastered to the needles due to snow/rain? Extra-terrestrials marking invasion points?

First guess would be Ips. They're itty bitty pine beetles. Are there any tiny black bugs on or around the affected area? 0 -
That's your classic pine wilt caused by beetles. And the black gunk you're seeing is sooty mold. 0 -
Just hang some tinsel and colored lights on it. No one will notice. 0 -
That tree was rubbed by a Bigfoot, no question about it. 3 -
I figured as much! 0
