i SALUTE the UPS drivers
run around with both doors open in this heat ....trucks have heaters but NO AC....driver just blew in and left couple of packages...he was coated with dust and the packages were too....country roads and next week temps will run above 100*.... i couldn't do it....

Yes they are. Most of these UPS drivers are in the teamsters. UPS is the premier driving job in America.

My sister's boy friend, that's been with UPS for over 30 years, hasn't made less than $100,000 in many years. I do feel that he earns it now because he has to drive from Knoxville, TN to Macon, GA 5 nights a week and that means driving through the planet of the apes twice a day. 3 -

Whereas, I drove over the road for many years, I had to stay out 14 days at a time, sometimes, 18 days at a time, and for $65K a year. I have talked to many of the UPS drivers and your report is in accord with what I heard. $95 K or more.
Not that the UPS man doesn't earn his pay, he does! It is just that the drivers for the smaller companies get screwed like I did.
For example, after six full days on the road the driver's clock is out and he has to do a 34 hour break. Sit still in a truck stop for 34 hours. UPS has it rigged where their drivers go 5 days on the road, then go home, and do their 34 at home. The guy out for 17 days does two [2] of the 34 hour breaks on the road.
Ask sister's boy friend if that is how it goes at UPS I bet he will tell you I am right.
So, in a matter of speaking, the UPS driver does half the work for twice the pay. Again, the UPS driver earns every dollar, it is just that the company drivers for the smaller companies get screwed. What a brutal job!
Knoxville to Macon, five nights a week. Many miles on I 75. Well, at least he is going through Atlanta at night.
From 5 am to 9 pm, I 75 is the nastiest road in the State of Georgia and Georgia has some nasty roads.0 -
No wonder it costs about 70 bucks to ship a single rifle, with a value of $800, from Oregon to LF in Alabama... It is what it is. I do, however, always offer a water or soda to my delivery drivers whenever they deliver something to the house when I'm home.. They do work hard for it... 0 -

UPS drivers do real well I have know a few yes they work hard
but no harder than a lot of construction workers ( personal experience ) in every weather conditions every season rain snow or blistering heat , same with many trades I am sure other's like line men RR repair crews I am sure the list is long after watching the fishing boat shows I could not leave them out and they can have it
two fellows I knew started as part time while going to school at UPS they gave up there school goal because they made more money once they got to be drivers then they would have at the profession they wanted now working in the warehouse not so much0 -
I am talking about over the road UPS guys making around $100K.
Another premium job in the trucking industry is, believe it or not, WalMart. Now, WalMart is notorious for screwing their employees. They hire some high school girl to run the register, they pay her as little as possible maybe 9 bucks an hour, and make sure she doesn't get enough hours a week to qualify for over time pay, or for benefits.
However, and this is why Mrs. Walton has 8 Billion dollars, they go the opposite with their drivers. Walmart knows that it is hard to find guys with a CDL who will work hard and show up on time. WalMart knows that every item in that store was delivered in an 18 wheeler. So WalMart bends over backwards to take good care of their drivers.
Most WalMart drivers are on a 5-day schedule, this way they drive over the road for 5 days and are home for two. So they do the mandatory 34 hour breaks at home rather than while sitting in a stinking truck stop.
Also, over the road WalMart drivers only go to WalMart terminals. I have been to WalMart terminals, they are huge! Well organized and easy to park in. Same deal with UPS.
With the smaller trucking companies you wouldn't believe some of the crap-hole terminals we have to deliver to. Not uncommon to sit out on the road out front, waiting in line for two hours before you can even get into the gate.
This never happens at a WalMart terminal. And then, after a 2 hour wait on the road, the little terminal is so crowded it is almost impossible to park.
Just imagine that, you work for one of the run of the mill companies, you drive the 22 hours from Greenville SC to Laredo, and then in Laredo, you have to wait a total of 3 hours to deliver your cargo. For those 3 hours you get paid zero.
That never happens to the WalMart guy, he is in and out of his nice, big new terminal in 20 minutes.
And WalMart drivers also make around $95K.0 -

The guys in the little brown trucks are also knocking down 100K? Yes along with all the other good stuff, good benefits at UPS.
This job attracts the cream of the industry.
You have to have driven over the road for at least two years with a spotless record to even be considered for a job at UPS.
You are a good driver but don't exercise much, you are 5-10 and 295. Don't even try, no Fat Boys at UPS.
You have expressed your individuality with tattoos all over your forearms, or, with a nice black hoop ear ring? Forget it, try Swift or Wernerr.
You are expressing you African American heritage, with dreadlocks 18 inches long? Forget it. Somebody will hire you and your hair style, but UPS won't.0 -
Allen, the other thing about Wal-Mart and Tyson (who my wife works for) drivers is not only large distribution centers/terminals with large lots and dozens of docking bays is the simple turn around when in the yard. They pull into a terminal with an empty trailer and unhook in the designated area. No cleaning out of a trailer or anything.
If they are not at the end of their work schedule, they are directed by the terminal dispatch to the pickup zone where a trailer is loaded and ready to go. They hook up, inspect the trailer and seal, manifest is downloaded to their unit and they turn and burn.
Once they get to delivery points, they simply back into the dock and sit while the stores or local distribution center unloads for them. At least that is how Tyson does it.
One thing I have never understood is why the US trucking industry never caught on to side loading trailers. See them all over in Europe. Pull into the dock lane and the sides slide up over the top of the trailer and forks load from the side...much faster than going into the trailer and backing all the way out.0
