I felt sorry for this racoon

He has been well fed on my cat food in the barn.  I don't mind them on 59.5 acres of my 60 acres.  When they get to being destructive or killing my chickens they must go.  I arm trapped one last night with candy in the trap.   The poor feller tried to chew off his arm to escape.  I dispatched him with the 22 and the buzzards got a free meal this morning.  I did feel bad he did that to his arm.  I had the trap post stuck in a hole I drilled in the the wood barn floor, if he had been able to pull the trap out he would have been fine.  I will never put a trap in the barn like that again, they will get stuck in the ground where the poor critter can move about on the anchor chain and not cause him harm until i show up with my 22.  I hope no more show up for a while, I HATE having to dispatch them, they are one of God's creatures and are quite smart.  This experience is going to bother me for a while.

    Same here. Hate to see anything suffer. Live trap and relocate a long way off or a 22 mag to the head.

    I understand.  I hate to kill any of God's creatures.
    I know that raccoons can really be a menace and we have lots of them up here.  I don't have any chickens etc. so they don't bother me, plus the dog keeps them away from the house, so I don't have to shoot them.  I did shoot a rabid one a few years ago, but that is different he was suffering.

    When I was a teenager fur prices were sky high.  My country cousin and I trapped many a northern raccoon.  The first animal I ever killed with a handgun was a trapped 'coon that I dispatched with my H&R 999 .22 revolver.

    Now fur prices are so low it doesn't pay to skin them.

     I never trapped  ( but have shot  a few 4 legged varmints or food source )   but I had  lots of class mates and co-workers did back when they made money for it any way for the fur 
        about 15 years + ago I found a live trap in one of our sheds it was tagged as to the owner and info by law but had the foot of a raccoon in it. it  must have made it out of the woods about 1/2 mile away dragging the trap and then chewed his foot off to get free ..  I did feel bad for the raccoon suffering .   the trap is still around some where .

    Raccoons have caused me much grief and lots of time repairing what they destroyed at the farm.

    I hunt for meat and also for predator control

    That being said, I do not want to see any animal suffer needlessly.

    I have very little respect for anyone that finds pleasure in any animal suffering

    We have plenty of lizards around the house and we see them on the deck most of the time.My wife is afraid of them and put a glue trap near the back door.I came home before her and there were 2 big lizards stuck to the trap.They had been struggling,but were alive but breathing hard.I was sorry for the poor lizards and took them and the trap to my work shop and dripped mineral on the trap until the lizards were un stuck and scurried away.I never used glue traps after that because the are inhumane for any critter to die on.

    My Dad told me about him and his brother trapping a a thief that was stealing corn out of their corn crib several years ago. The thief had made a small hole in the side of the log house corn crib and would reach in at night every once in awhile and get the corn on the cob for his animals. They suspected it was a guy that lived few miles away. (no security cameras or game cameras back then)  They set a big steel trap inside (security trap) and they got him like you got that XXXcoon.  Knowing dad and his six brothers the thief probably wished he had chewed his arm off by the time they got through with him while he was still in the trap.

    Obviously, you're not much of a "fur harvester". Before the collapse of the fur market, I was running close to 100 coon traps a day for 30-45 days each winter.
