Why should I buy a 1911? I understand the historical value. I've never shot one but I want one.

  Your historical knowledge then should have answered your question. It’s not only the best designed handgun ever built, but a proven Design under very adverse conditions in the past. If the 45ACP round you feel is a bit to much, there are a couple of other calibers available, I myself favor the 45ACP. Also if you go with Colt they tend to hold their valve.
