Never Fails

Grass has been growing here and needing cut about every week. Not normal in the summer to have to cut it so much. Then this morning the old seizure of the spindle ... the awful sound of screaming metal to metal. Parts on the way.

    hope you didnt loose the belt also, they are expensive anymore

    I never had one go bad until they started putting the sealed spindles on mower decks. The next time one  craps out I will replace them all with ones that have a grease fitting. Bob

    All sealed on the Toro. Can't complain used it 12 yrs before it gave up. Yep belt was smoked but I have a spare.

    It'd be down right silly to put on the old belt anyway since it all has to come off . 
    12 years is a pretty good run for sure.

    I almost wish we had to cut the law a little more. It has been so dry around here it looks like the dust bowl.

    I disassembled my last bad spindle. The grease fitting was useless sealed bearings inside, the grease couldn't get to them.

    traded up to a new hustler  54" flip up deck mower...got it home and mowed for just under an hour and the engine locked up....back to the dealer ...no word yet...i have a bad feeling about this deal.....

    Zero turns are easy to work on.. just pull the floor pan..2 bolts and 6 bolts later the spindle is out.

    John Deere riding mower yep the spindle bearings are sealed but the spindle has grease fittings ! Real useful . Now when I rebuild them I unseal the bearings so the grease fitting will actually do something . Always the middle spindle of the three that goes out , think it is a design problem . Pulling the grease seals was a suggestion from Perry Shooter

    Grease fitting is not for the bearings. Grease is a heat sink so as the spindle does not get quite so hot. Removing the internal bearings shields might even shorten the life of the spindle. Dirt and water still gets inside the spindle, eventually.
    Best to remove a deck about every two years and re-pack or check the bearings.
    Usually if one spindle bearing shells out the other also need attention. (and they usually fail right when you need to be mowing.
    I can usually just replace or re-pack the bearings while the spindle is still on the deck if the spindle housing is good vs buying complete spindle assembly and twisting off the self tapping spindle bolts.
    Bearing can be bought very reasonable with some careful shopping. So can good V belts with careful shopping on flea bay. I usually go with Kevlar v belts.

    Now running a Craftsman riding mower on town corner lot for almost 12 years, replaced a tension spring that broke, the drive belt for the blades is all.  Built cheap to sell but seems to be holding up OK so far.
    New riding mowers have gotten expensive !!!

    Gotten expensive they have been expensive. Man who bought mine new wanted to start a mowing business. That worked for a short period. I purchased the $5500 mower for $2800 off of fleabay with 9 hours on it and it was within 15 mile of my home .  Had one major service out of warranty a leaky rear seal on one of the hydro units. Starter was replaced under warranty and I just changed the ignition switch myself.  I usually only put around 25/30 hours a yr on it. Mowing fast cuts the time down. I think it has something like 340 hours on it now.

    you can take the seals off of the sealed bearings and use them as outside lubricated.
