My Bat is Back!
Every year this little guy comes to my house. This perch is the ceiling of the big porch, it is 12 feet above the porch floor. He has this spot behind an abandoned wasp nest.
Every year he shows up in May, and he is there every day until November. After sunset he flies around all night long. He is gone all winter.
I consider him "my little pet." This year, to my dismay, he didn't show up. I figured he was kaput.
But, last week in June there he was! I am glad to have my little buddy back.
ps. We have no mosquitoes.

I did buy a racquet ball racquet for "lower floors" duty. If I find them in the basement, 1st floor, or 2nd floor, they don't make it out alive.0 -

Do you have a big pot to catch all that free guano? Also have you checked its papers to see if it's Chinese? I wonder if you try to feed it Agave Worm would it be Mexican or a Chinese bat impersonating a Mexican bat? 0 -

Bats that eat skeeters, snakes that eat rats, skinks and toads eating bugs of all types are all welcome at the Dreher household. I'm not real big on snakes but I HATE rats so rat eating snakes are just AOK with me!! 0 -

I didn't think of the risk I was taking, dealing with that bat guano on my porch!
Gee, I have read of people that put up bat houses right next to their house. Bringing in a half dozen bats right next to their houses! Think of all that poisonous bat guano. I need to contact those folks and tell them to destroy the bat houses.
I have flown hang gliders off of Lookout Mountain, 97 times. I have hopped rolling freight trains. I have jumped out of a perfectly good Cessna at 2,800 feet with a parachute on my back and a reserve on my chest, and lived to talk about it. Went back up that same day and jumped again from that Cessna. I have taken some pretty big risks in my life.
But now, thanks to y'alls posts, I realize what a risk I am taking from bat guano.
Tell you what, I will accept the risk of sweeping some bat crap off of my porch once a week, so that, I won't have to face the risk of West Nile Virus and other mosquito borne illnesses.
I think I will get a used fire department full face mask and oxygen tank, and wear that while sweeping bat doo doo once a week.
That ought to make it safe.

allen griggs - Bat guano is one of the better free fertilizers. Collect it in a pot and use it after dude leaves for the season. The amount of bat poo where you need a respirator is like in tonnage in a closed area. You'll barely have enough for a tomato plant or two from dude.
The thing to worry about batty is the fleas that on it. Now if he was a pigeon then you'll need to worry about the poo. And if that was the case that said pigeon would get a case of lead poisoning after roosting for the evening.

The neighbors will be really POd, if I set out bat houses. They don't seem to be too concerned that they are in my house. I suspect they will not be happy, if they end up in their house - because it is better suited than a bat house.brier-49 said:

How loud will I have to play the music to get them to leave?
What time of the day do I play this loud music?
After the neighbors call the police - and they come and tell me to turn the music down - will the bats come back?
How many bat houses do I have to put up for the amount of bats I have in my house? Yes, I have dozens of them in the house. I can hear them in the walls and walking across the soffit above my bed. I play racquet ball with at least one every two months. The last time I went into the knee walls to check my sticky traps I could not even see the traps because they were covered with bats - and yes the guano was not something I particularly want inside my house.
If the bats do move to the bat house because of the loud music, will they stay in the bat house or move back into my house?
Will they move back into my house anyway when Winter gets here?
I have visited with a lot of folks that tell me how great bats are and how to build bat houses. I have never talked with someone that actually had them inside the house and were happy to have them there.
The city does a pretty good job with the insects (mosquitoes). I do have some issues with spiders and wasps, but evidently the bats aren't interested in them.0 -

If possible, set up an air conditioning unit in the attic. They're there because the temps are right and if you cool it off enough they'll move on. Once they're out then you need to figure out how they got in and screen it off.0
