I knew my grandfather (dads side )  a little just enough to say I did meet him and talk some very little but  by then he was just a old man content to live a meager life .
I do know he was a WWI vet and loved to drink and the way it sounds drinking came  first  before the family , I do not know if he was always like that but the impression I got he was
I am sure he beat my dad as well that"s just how things were , my dad had one brother who died very young and had eight sisters .
skip  ahead to my point  over my dads life I ask many times about his grandfather every time he would just say he was a mean man and that's all I ever got  as response,   even when dad had a short time to live  ( we knew cancer was taking him ) he would talk about old friends and family but always the same about his grand father "he was  just a mean man "not one word more .  I think about that often  what he did or was like to have have my dad never say one word about him , I wish he would have said something about why but I gave up and even now think about what may have happened .
this is JMHO   your grandson is 15 I would tell him the truth  enough so he would know about him his good and bad side
its  all part of his history .

Wow that is better than i could have said it. Everything i know about my grandfather came from my personal memory or from others. My Dad would never talk about him so i never asked. My Dad never ever said anything bad about anyone. If someone was a bad person i would not be allowed to play at their house. I did not understand why i could not play there just that i better not be caught there. Later when i was grown i understood.

I never knew my grandparents.  All dead before I was born.  This conversation reminds me that my parents really never spoke about their parents and now it has me wondering after hearing your stories.  My grandparents were immigrants from Norway and England.  Farmers and miners respectively.

Just be honest......sounds like the man had demons. I had a grandfather that wasn't so great as a husband or father, but was in WWII. He died when I was 2. My dad died when I was 12 and I never heard my father speak ill toward him. My aunts have been forthcoming as I have grown older. Like I said......he wasn't a great guy.....but he is part of the family. Knowing the truth is better than not knowing.
