Google Chrome #2

I didn't want to jump on bpost's post but would like to know if anyone is using the new Edge.  If so, what do you think.  I've read that it's nothing like the Edge of years past.

    If it's from Microsoft, it records everything you do. You can't disable it, you can't change it, and you can't even turn the machine off unless you unplug it. That's right. Windows doesn't turn all the way off when you power down your machine. It stays in deep hibernation and Microsoft can turn it on remotely to change back anything you think you've disabled.

    I would never use a MSFT product that I didn't have to use. Edge is just as bad or worse than IE.

    Exactly. Unless you are FORCED to, either by your employer or by virtue of some vital software (CAD/CAM or such) that only runs on Windows, there is not one reason to stick with the evil empire that Microsoft has become. If you are an average computer user, you can easily and successfully kiss them goodbye.

    Ok Rocky, I'm not very computer literate but I don't like google knowing everything I do.  So what is your recommendation on the best way to get rid of Google??

    Don't use Chrome. Don't use Edge. Use Firefox or DuckDuckGo.

    dreher, if you are going to stick with Windows, there's damn little you CAN do, because whatever you switch to, they'll switch back during one of their mandatory updates. But if you want to try, switch to Firefox, change the search engine to Duck, Duck, Go, and also load the add-on uBlock Origin for ads blocking. That's how mine was set up until I jumped ship.

    But if you are willing, just try a Linux system or two. I can give you written help, or just watch a couple of Youtubes on how to try Linux on a USB stick. You can do that without erasing Windows. I highly recommend looking at Linux Mint 19.3 with the Cinnamon desktop. You could also try Ubuntu or Zorin Core. The XFCE desktop uses a bit less memory, but the Cinnamon is more "like home" for Windows escapees. Desktop refers to how the system looks and feels. Don't obsess about it, they're all easy to navigate.

    When you use Duck duck go you can turn off its use of information from Bing, GOOGLE, or other search engines in the settings menu.  I turned off every dang one of them and NEVER see pop ups or ads for something I may have searched for.
