Dexamethasone proves first life-saving drug
A cheap and widely available drug can help save the lives of patients seriously ill with coronavirus.
The low-dose steroid treatment dexamethasone is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus, UK experts say.
The drug is part of the world's biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus.
It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth.
Had
the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of
the pandemic, up to 5,000 lives could have been saved, researchers say. ![]()

It's a commonly used steroid. Steroids are a front line medication for inflammatory processes. Steroids were being used on these patients from the beginning. Compiling data is useful in determining successful courses of treatment. 0 -
Steroids have been used to treat pneumonia for decades. A logical choice to test them on Covid-19 and it is great news that it is showing positive results. Hopefully more are put on it when in the needing oxygen stage and before being placed on a ventilator, even though there is more money in ventilation as we have seen. 0 -
Been using it for cattle for years. Don 0 -
Been taking Humira for about 18 months. One side effect is that it lowers your resistance to infection so if I come into contact with covid19 I pretty much will catch it. The good news is that like a steroid it blocks inflammation so it may help keep the symptoms moderate. So my quandary is to take it or not take it. Kind of damned if I do and damned if I don't.
