Gas cans,,,,

got two gas cans stored in the garage.  They are the 'New' type gas cans, with no vents.  The garage is finished/insulated and I leave the windows cranked partially open.  
The gas cans swell up huge and when I open the cap to relieve pressure will sometimes spit gas.  If I leave the caps loose on the cans I will fill the garage with gas fumes and I don't want that either.  Just never remember the old cans being a problem.
How do you address this issue??

    They make conversion spouts to change back to the days when such things made sense. Problem solved.

    and a 31/64 drill bit and your good to go

    most of my cans I just drilled a 1/16 inch hole  and skipped the yellow vents

    just a heads up
     a very nice lady who worked at the credit union I deal with 
    back last year her and her husband mowing grass . ( and had the gas stored in the garage )  lawn mower set off the gas fumes and husband caught fire , his wife ran in to help and was burned real bad long hospital stay she got out but therapy awaited her not sure how she is doing but live will never be the same for her or her husband 
     lot of people mover there gas cans including us  ( I keep about 30 + gallons on hand ) to another out building out of the garages away from any lawnmower's   or vehicles . 
          as for the gas cans for a short time prices on the early spouts and containers were crazy on the auctions . finely aftermarket stepped in  I bought 20 or 30 vent caps and several + old style spouts  auction stes have them even most farm stores have replacement spouts now ( old style ) 
     and last year while hauling off some items to recycle day  they must have had twenty or more old gas ( plastic ) cans and one metal  with the old spouts I am guessing the " do good green earth people" turned them in 
     any way they I picked up 6  more gas cans with the spouts  , I was going to take all of them and one of the helpers must have thought I was going to make a dollar so told me that's enough >>LOL  there were headed to scrap recycle any way but I still came out Ok 
     and I also buy them at yard sales auctions but are getting scarce. 
     as for swelling up in the summer they do tend to expand with the heat the gas is normally cooler and expands with the high heat  I just do not fill them all the way . I have seen them push the vent caps off f full 

    any way be careful where you store them it was a eye opening even when the lady and husband were burned so bad \

    If you put a vent in your can use a step drill bit to drill the hole because they make a more uniform round hole than a regular drill bit. 

    I put a vent and a flex nozzle on a Obama can and it works like it should now.

    i would not keep gas cans in any "TIGHTLY" or remotely tightly closed structure.   think about what will happen when one gets warms and swells up to the point of cracking, not a good thing to happen.  gasoline when mixed with the proper amount of air is a highly and very powerful explosive.  and yes i do vent all my obama cans.

    I used a regular 31/64" wood bite along with the yellow vents and they all work just fine.  I inserted them with a rubber mallet.

    We ordered "water cans" on the internet not long ago because we couldn't stand another battle with the new "improved" gas cans.    Its amazing how much these water cans look and work just like the old gas cans.....I wonder if they realize they might be used for gas instead of water....hmmmmm????

    Who ever the idiot was that invented and changed all the gas cans to the present state should be doused with all the gas I have spilled on myself, on the ground, and on the machines I was filling up!   

    It sure does nothing to protect the environment!

    I picked up 2 of these at a farm store. Work fantastic. I paid $25 each for them. No more stupid Obama California gas cans.

    I started going to garage and estate sales to find some old style plastic gas cans. Finally amassed about 12 in good shape for about $2-3 each. I went to Tractor Supply and bought the universal replacement spouts. I keep at least 5 of them filled with non-ethanol gas with a shot of preservative stored in my detached shed.

    I just pushed an awl into my plastic ObamaCan until the hole was large enough to plug with a golf tee. The tapered tee makes it easy to pull out, and with a vent hole, even the stupid new spouts pour just fine.

    I use a #12 sheet metal screw with a large head. Unscrew to vent. (Don't play golf!!  :) )

    Several years ago i purchased some surplus jerry cans online.  Fill them to the filler neck bottom and there is enough air space to allow for expansion.  That, and the design of the jerry can does expand or contract it seems.  Figure if they made them soldier proof i shouldnt be able to tear them up.

    Most of the gas cans I use are old Eagle gas cans like this one with the Funnelet Filler that stores inside the can for measuring oil for 2 stroke engines.  And also the old Eagle Gasser.

    Leaving an "open vent" allows gas fumes to vent  but also allows cool, damp air to return to the container.  Over a bit of time, I ASSume everyone can figure out the results. I keep my ATV/ mower/generator gas cans in a rickety old building with plenty of air flow. If/when the temp reaches 90*, I go by and pop the vents releasing the built up pressure and then close the vents.
