looks like my saw may have finally died..........
got an old XL-12 homelite that has to be close to 50 years old, got it out yesterday to cut a small tree down and can't get it to run wide open sounds like it is about half throttle, gonna go get a new plug this morning , tried about everything else last night, clean carb, new gas, starts fine just won't rev up wide open, linkage is all clear no blockage and is moving the full length, I bought it used for about $150 in the 70's so I guess I got my money's worth......

Sounds like my last two saws that died. One Homelite, one Poulan Pro. Spent more $ learning they couldn't be repaired than the black Friday deal I got on a new 45cc Poulan Pro at Tractor Supply. $99.
(I did see a Stihl ad a few days ago. MS170 for $149.)
Look for the knife in a couple days. Got if off yesterday. Sorry for the delay.

Did you check the in tank filter, clean the carb screen good, and use a kit in the carb?
If it was runnin good when you stored it, will probably need carb kit and being 50 will need fuel line replaced.
Before installing the new kit soak the carb in 50/50 white vinegar mix for awhile then a rinse and use low pressure air.
You can get a kit for about $10 on flea bay.
I've got some of them the age of yours and carb's and fuel lines is all they ever needed plus little bit of TLC.
Too long in storage with out a run, especially a hot storage place is what generally does them in. (and ethanol gas)3 -
okie had it running just week ago, and it ran fine, it will literally scream, I allways drain fuel and then start and run it dry, my daughter borrowed it and I have a feeling they did something to it, either played with mixture screws or to much or to little oil, I put a new plug in it and it still only ran about 1/2 throttle or so, I turned the mixture screw in about 2 turns and it is almost screaming again, I am lucky if I use it once a year, Kids claimed they didn't do anything to it. but they have a friend who claims to know everything and I have a feeling one of them tinkered with it, I noticed when it wouldn't cut, and was messing with plug last night, the blade was on backwards!! so I know one of them tinkered with it......
the flywheel had worn so bad it was worn out eggshaped, and a local repair shop told me about 20 years ago it was junk and to throw it away, they returned it to me in pieces, I cut the points and wired it with an electronic ignition then welded the flywheel on so it would turn square, have ran it the last 20+ years that way, I just hate to throw something away, If I had used it daily I may have bought a new one back then, it cut a lot of wood since and now that I don't burn anymore I only use it to clear the trail into my tree stand occasionally...... Hate to buy a new one just to sit on the shelf in the shed0 -

Things with motors, especially chain saws, Do NOT get loaned out.

learned the hard way when I loaned a chainsaw to a co worker . Came back not running and a totally shot bar and chain , where he had cut into the dirt . New bar and chain and a carb rebuild .Still using it thirty years later , but it STAYS home

Yep, Chalk that one up to a learning experience about Loaning out your stuff. Don't whine or complain to her/them. It could have been lots worse, like for example a lost arm/leg or tree down on someone and you would feel worse. (a chainsaw chain on backwards is one hint of in-experience operator, etc)
Kinda hard to refuse a daughter about loaning, but loaning to a woman an item that is kinda dangerous is another thing and if she has husband/boyfriends that is going to be using your eq is little more unsettling.
I do not loan out anything and even expect to get it back and I do not borrow anything.
Learned my lesson about borrowing stuff when I was young. When their's broke that I borrowed and it most generally did I replaced their stuff with new and moved on. You learn your lesson if you go buy replacements that are lots better and costly than what they loaned you. (it's just the right thing to do and move on and don't whine or complain, it was not their fault)0 -
My old Homelite Super 2 chainsaw had been sitting since 1995. The gas lines were rotted, the primer bulb was cracked and the carb was dirty and the tank fuel filter was nasty. The whole chainsaw was pretty much filthy like I left it when it conked out 23 years earlier. I was able to find a primer bulb on E-bay, some small gas line, new chain and a new fuel tank filter for it. Then I cleaned the carb and took both the gas and oil tanks off and rinsed them out and put it back together. It's hard to get all that junk back inside the case on these little chainsaws. Any way she fired up on about the 3rd crank and runs like it should. 0 -

that is the worst thing Bruce, but I would bet this "know it all" buddy of theirs did it, I gave them an old chain as they were just cutting up 4x4 posts from an old deck to burn and didn't want to ruin any of my good ones.
