Thinking about another 308 AR
I'm contemplating another 308 AR. I'm kinda looking at the Ruger piston AR in 308. The sticking point for me is do I want a 16 inch barrel or the collapsible butt stock. I just can't picture a 16 inch barreled 308. I would think there would be a considerable amount of muzzle blast and I don't know if I'd want to feel that shoulder stock after an afternoon of shooting. I've got my Remington 700 and 1960's vintage AR 10 but those are 10 lb. plus rifles and I normally shoot them off a bench or their bipods. I'm looking at a used Ruger for $1250 or I could just assemble one from parts. I've got the same Ruger in 6.8 SPC and I like it a lot. If I'd assemble one it would probably have a full stock and an 18 inch barrel, decisions, decisions.

Other then the weight I couldn't be happier with the PSA I put together it shoots better then I can. I've added a crimson trace series 2 scope since the picture I bought the striped lower and the upper with the kit to finish the lower this one has the 20' barrel

Does not look like regular AR but I have two FN-AR s that are top rate pieces. I would recommend you take a look at them. 0 -
My DPMS 16” shoots well with peepsights. I think a 20” barrel would shoot better out past 100 yards with good optics. 0 -
Go short if you get one of those Blast Shields that throw the sound forward. And get the 6.5 Creedmoor I hear they're gentler on the shoulder. Well that's a combo you don't see much of. I know a guy who got a Springfield SOCOM II (chopped down M1A) she's loud and short (kind a cool but that only goes so far). I think that was the first and last time dude brought her out.
Why piston? Get a adjustable gas block and save a few bucks.
1960's AR10? Is that the one with sheet metal? What was it AR180?
10 pounds. I wonder what my build will weigh in at? Without the barrel she might weigh in at 10 pounds. That's with the low mass BCG. I was watching something on youtube about the KAC M110 having to be under 15 pounds. I reckon that's why they went with medium profile 20" barrel. I got to get a decent fish scale for the weigh in.

You can get addicted to these things. Last build was a 24" bull barrel on AeroPrecision lower. Would rather not post how accurate this baby is with the Vortex on top because people would doubt me. Yeah its heavy but it goes the distance. Feeding it with 175 and 190 SMKs with amazing results. 0 -

Either way there is some really good commercial ammunition for the .308 Win. and the 6.5 Creedmoor. Hornady Black ammunition is performing excellent for me in the large AR platforms and bolt action rifles. I can usually find it for less than $1.00/shot ($17.99/20) with some searching.
No matter really since it is the quality of the barrel and the assembly of that barrel to the receiver which makes a difference. Plug 'n Play parts with discount barrels will always shoot O.K. but they will never shoot consistently small groups. I know, everyone wants to be the exception with their home built ARs.
I've tried running those collapsible stocks all day and they will beat you to death without some additional padding like a PAST pad, especially from the bench!
I shoot 16" and 18" barrels frequently these days. That's what everyone wants, short barrels for suppressors. That's why Ruger sports a 16" barrel. The good 175 grain VLD loads (.308) will perform best when you want to make a go at 1,000 yards. While I like the .308, I prefer the 6.5 Creedmoor for accuracy and broader consistency across bullet weights. The recoil is also less...
The length of the barrel between 16" and 20" makes no difference unless you're shooting open sights when the length of the sight radius improves your accuracy potential. They are all custom parts and the barrels are made from Bartlein blanks in the GAP shop; contoured, threaded and chambered with AR chamber reamers not bolt action reamers. I do reload and sometimes buy new 308. I'd go with the 6 or 6.5 Creedmoore but I really don't want another caliber. What I really wanted was an M1A Bush rifle but they are pretty much non existent although there is a member here that has one.
