Short slow jaunts between fields or longer high speed trips, it makes a difference. Probably not the best choice but it's their dogs, their business. 0 -
On the farm/ranch...no problem
On the road...it irritates me to no end. Would you put your 3 year old kid in the bed of the truck to go to town?
I see guys with crew cab trucks and no one else in the truck...but dog is in bed and bouncing from rail to rail. All it takes is one bad bump or dip or you have to swerve and that dog is going out. The person behind that may hit them is going to feel like crap and the owner is probably going to be going batcrap crazy on the driver. My dogs are family and I take care of them like I would kids (medical, food, securing them in my truck)...they even have a seat belt harness.6 -
Most dogs I've seen sway with the truck movement and do fine. But it's their dog.
Piss me off to see the people driving with a dog in their lap or hanging out the drivers window. I would support a law to stop that stuff.6 -

Back in the ‘70’s, I was helping coach a little league baseball team. We had a game across the county and no other parents or coach showed up. I loaded 12 pre-re-teen boys in the back of my truck and made the game. You’d probably get life in prison if you tried that today.0 -

Heck no.....that is an awful chance someone is taking with their pet.
We also used to ride around in the back of the trucks when we were kids.....just back roads mostly. The funniest thing was when all the kids jumped up in my grand-dad's truck and all the women came running out of my Granny's house yelling to jump out of there!0 -
My Jack Russel rides back saddle on my old air cooled 900 SS Ducati and performs one hell of a balancing act no problem.
I would say it's okay depending on the canine participating on the ride.0 -

Every little league away game I evey played we all rode in the bed of a pickup truck...including the dog.

I never use to care but being older I hate to see it and think of what could happen . I think getting older you tend to care more about living even dog lives matter
but than again me and my buddies and countless others use to pile into the back of a pick up and go for drives , my wife's mom use to take all family kids ,cousins ,and neighbors included into town in back of there pickup. even when my wife and i were dating we still hauled groups of people going fishing on the weekends
I do not think it was that uncommon years ago
side note on being young and stupid and lucky as possible a friend had a old opal station wagon with a luggage rack we would go out thru the country take turns on top hanging on while the driver was swerving from lane to lane and going fast ( while the rest of the passengers were tossing beer bottles at the rider on top to knock them off or they chicken out and ask to stop ( more like screaming stop you )(&^% ) .
one I still cringe when thinking about, I had a close friend on the hood of my 65 mustang one night ( long story ) I was doing just under a hundred MPH before I stopped ant let him off all he had to hang on to was the windshield wipers and he cut his hands holding so tight . and yes we stayed friends for many years after3 -

Seems to be a Guy Big dog thing.
I've seen them types going down the road in their Big Cowboy Caddy truck, Blue heeler in the back on the flat bed, Hay bale spear stickin straight back, feed sacks blowing out on the road, mirrows stickin out on both sides of their truck about 3 ft and the driver reared back in the seat like a Philadelphia Lawyer, big cowboy hat, when he gets out of the rig sometimes has on his spurs, high top cowboys boots with his britches legs down inside the boots and may have on his chaps. I'm wondering if he could buy a sick hoars supper if he had to pay cash.
Go big or go home, if you can't run with the big dogs.
Really a shame about the Blue Heeler's cow dogs trying to hang on. I met one of them Jerk off's coming around a curve on a dirt road and he hit a pot hole the Blue Heeler feel off right in front of me and I ran over him in my old 4x4 while he was still rolling down the road and he was immediately dead. The guy never even knew he lost his dead dog. I dragged the dog to the side of the road where he could see him if he came back looking.0 -
Even inside a vehicle in an emergency stop or a collision an animal becomes a missile. That is why child seats are required for kids and why in the rare case a cat has to go somewhere like the veterinarian, she rids in a carrier which is strapped to a seat belt.
Not my dog, but apart from a hay field, never.

My dog rides inside now, but I know some dogs won't and prefer to be in the back. I've put my dog in the bed before, tied down, and it was not a good experience. Even on short trips on the farm I've had my dog decide to jump out and hurt himself. I don't put them in the back any more. If your dog will only ride in the bed, at least have a good solution to contain them, please. 0 -
dogs should be tied in backyard, like women in the kitchen, no good can come from taking either out in public......... 6 -
I don't think it's a good idea but I can't count the times I was in the bed of a pickup going to town when I was a younger boy. Course lot less traffic and all it would have took is one time and it would be very bad.
Course riding on a belly mower on a Farmall C and then slipping off was a disaster to me, broken femur, ribs, ect. ect ect. Whole summer in hospital.0 -
Growing up, I rode countless miles in the back of a pickup truck with my sister; parents rode up front in a single cab truck. Numerous times between Oklahoma & New Mexico on I-40 in the summer. We survived just fine. Made us who we are now. My parents meant no harm, and this truck was our most reliable form of transportation. Yes, tragedy could have struck, but, odds were on our side. I don't need government deciding what is best for me or my family. 0 -

Growing up on a farm we rode miles in the bed of the truck . Hauling hands from field to field etc . Dogs rode with us . Now not so much so . Too much traffic and too many rules . Now the dog rides inside

I was staying with my cousin up in Washington state. His girlfriend had a big * (auto censor got me. Let's call it a very dark]} lab that she just loved. Goofy dog but friendly. Shadrach was his name.
He loved to ride in the back of the pickup. One day, Shadrach fell out and he was Dead Right There. That gal was really heartbroken.
Thank God my cousin was driving at the time and not me I think she would have worked me over at 2 am with the sheep shears.0 -
We all did a lot of things in our youth we were lucky to survive. Sometimes it was the only choice. Out here you still sometimes see three generations in the back of a pickup because that is the only ride they have, and they need to get somewhere. Other times, it was just the kind of bad decision the young are prone to make. Doesn't make it a good idea, it was not and is not. 0 -
