Viper in the Driveway #2

NC mountains.  Length of snake about 40 inches.
I am willing to bet the farm that this is a Mongrolian Cobra.

    sure he wasn't dropped off from the hood??  in that second picture it looks like he was holding his head sideways getting ready to strike........

    A typical Blacksnake?  They will bite and draw blood with their small teeth.

    Just an everyday blacksnake. Good for scaring the crap out of you.
    Wife will grab one in a heart beat, she has been bitten several time, teeth are small and easy to break off.
    My barn is full of them, they stay in the barn they are safe. I have seen them as long as 6 feet.
    I think that one looks to have a white belly, another variety is black all around, we call them black racers. They WILL cause dirty drawers.

    We have a milk shake that is almost identical in size shape and coloration...

    And they have a nasty disposition.

    Rat and mice destroyers but they get big and look deadly...

    And if caught unaware by a human they will strike on the ankle lightning quick...

    If you have boots on you are mostly okay but I have been bit on the back of the calf - and while not venomous or septic many people react poorly and the site gets swollen and red and angry and itchy and hurts...

    They move pretty quick over terrain as well.

    I know they are beneficial like spiders but they freak me out in a hind brain kind of way.

    We did have some moron let his pet snake loose back to nature in the area - and 18 months later we had a reticulated ball python eating housecats and small dogs - it had gotten quite large and when the weather got cold was moving under buildings to stay warm.

    An elderly widow called 911 to report a giant anaconda was eating her dog - and they of course dispatched a police officer even though they thought she was blind and off her meds and lonely and confused...

    It was the python and it had eaten her dog.

    Go figure.

    Black rat snake, elaphe obsoleta. A good one to have around.
    Taxonomists somehow believe snakes are in the same family as felines since they changed the genus to panthers.

    I mowed over a nest of them with the bush hog not long ago. Didn't see them till I came around to make another pass and seen the pieces.

    Black rat snake.  1. cobras are not viperids, they are elapids.  2.  That is neither a viperid nor an elapid.  3.  Send the farm.

     THAT'S A BLACK RATTLER.  The males don't have rattles during the summer.
    Very deadly.
    The only way to kill 'em is grab 'em by the tail and snap their head off.

    They will mimic a rattler when cornered, roll over and play dead to.

    I would normally agree that it is a black snake, but the shovel shaped head is throwing me off. Most black snakes have a much smaller head. Even a 6 or 7 foot black snake normally doesn't have that copperhead shaped head. Very odd.

    Black Snake. I've seen them get up to around 8 ft long and have a red stub tail.
    Seen them swallow chicken eggs and small chickens. They really like to rob bird nests. 
    They can climb up the side of a brick building or Power line pole with ease.

    Sometimes called Chicken Snakes. Seen one fall from above a chicken house door entrance around my Mother's neck as she entered the building to gather eggs and she was really dancing and running and she was not really scared of snakes, so she thought. I had seen her pull them out of chicken nest boxes and whip them against a pole or building until they died.

    Sometimes they will even hold their head up like a Cobra and hiss when they get mad.
    They make good pets if you have mice.

    Those Kansas bull snakes are middlin'  Largest (up to 108" come from South Texas.  Further north you go the smaller the maximum size.  4 feet is large for one from Wyoming.   Sort of the reverse of Bergmann's rule.

    Have seen and captured some south of Abilene TX, & Brewster and Jeff Davis County that were close to 7". Spent time in Southern AZ and seen some giant DORs. Live average 5'. Specimens from SD were around 4'. I have had them strike at me, but cant recall ever being bitten. Their hissing is awesome and loud.
